Waterproof Tape

06/28/2009 4:40 PM

I am looking for a one sided "sticky" tape that will stick to itself underwater for a time of 2-3 months. 3-5cm wide? Color N/A , UV protected N/A......just able to stick to itself firmly .

Does such a thing exist?

How about self amalgamating tape? You can buy it from many electrical places. It has no adhesive but 'grows' together to form a watertight insulation. I'm not sure from your post but do you need to apply it underwater? I've never tried that.

Nigh,

I need a tape that can be used on spliced ends of rope to hold the spliced part (3 twists of the rope) tightly together on itself. The tape not only has to stick to the polydacron line but also to itself.

  1. The Eye is spliced
  2. The splice is wrapped with Dyneema twine
  3. The ends of the splice have 3 small gnarly knobs protruding (tag ends)
  4. The RED TAPE needs to make sure these tag ends do not hang up on as the line is passed through the rope.
  5. There is little tension on the Eye or Line.
  6. I just need a smooth surface to cover these 3 tag ends.
  7. Burning the ends with a hot gun ,on a diagonal works, but the specs call for the Tag ends to have a continuous taped and smooth surface as it passes through the ring.
  8. I need a water proof tape that will hold to a PolyDacron line as well as to itself, for about 6-8 weeks under water.
  9. No melting glue, no dripping tar, just a simple water proof tape that will stick to itself really well.

Thank you.

Smitty,

Go to a local sailing / marine store and pick up some rigging tape. Get the self-bonding tape that 3M makes. Stuff works great in a constant wet environment but if you're submerging I would take the extra step and use some heat shrink tube over it.

I'd go one step further and use heat shrink tubing instead of tape!

You can check some of the websites for well known tape manufacturers; they have online catalogs which will have technical details which should answer or at least point you in the right direction.

You should also be able to get contact information for tech representatives who can answer followup questions.

These types of tapes are available; I have used several in applications where water is a problem.

Use a tie-wrap or zip-tie type of fastener, and then cut flush after cinching it tight. can be removed with a box-cutter knife. fast, efficient, clean, and meets most of your requirements if not all.

Re: Waterproof Tape

Ok, seems there are several options for this.

The specifications sheet calls for a taped transition from lashings (over the spliced rope) to the main line .

I need tape.

Cable ties, although they can hold under these circumstances, would not meet the requirements asked for. But thnaks for jumping in here.

Thank you all.

Lots of options listed.

Try gorilla tape I have used it on many things and it stays stuck. The only problem I have ever had with it is in very high temps where the glue can be softened. other than that its great stuff.

If you read the stories about it you will find one where they used it under water for eight months without it coming undone.

Back in the day, all damage control kits on US navy vessels carried friction tape. It was the only tape which could be put onto a wet surface and stick to itself and the surface. I have applied it to submerged equipment with good results. Here is a 3M datasheet, but there are other manufacturers as well.

Hello Smitty,

There is a type of tape called "Self Amalgamating Tape"

To use it, or at least the type I used, I had to cut a length then stretch it until it almost breaks. This breaks the 'weld' sticky stuff and makes the tape warm. Wrap it round anything and squeeze it together as you do and after you have finished. You will feel the warmth. I used it outside for several years. It effectively becomes a single welded piece of plastic round whatever you have wrapped.

Once again, this list gives me a huge supply of ideas to look at.

The good part is that whatever tape is used, it will be proven in just a few days to work or not.

Thank all of you for the assist.

Hello Smitty,

Can you please let me/us know if and or when the Amalgamating tape fails? The longest I have seen it in use on a constant strain link of quite a small dia' was 30 years, in all weathers.

Good luck

Hello Smitty,

Yes 30 years mine lasted. But bear in mind it was carrying a static load of just a kilo!

And it was round wire. It may well be different round rope? But you will see soon enough if it works. The good thing is you can cut a meter off, stretch it until you think it will break and apply that length on top of the already bonded joint. And of course, wrap the tape round as far down the rope as you wish?

Note, it will not work unless you stretch it! It has no 'adhesive as such but, when stretched the plastic is moldable and when applied correctly will conform to every contour.

Thank you for your reply post Smitty!
