Explosion-Proof Occupancy Sensor

07/01/2009 10:34 AM

We are doing the electrical for an aircraft hangar. They are calling for an explosion proof line voltage wall mounted occupancy sensor. Is there one made?

Seems kind of pointless. If there is a significant explosion that could take out an occupancy sensor, wouldn't the same explosion also remove the occupants?

Do you mean something along the lines of a hazardous area-rated PIR sensor? If so, none that I am aware of (unless you put a standard PIR sensor inside a flameproof enclosure fitted with a hazardous area-rated window).

This is a rather specialised product (or likely a system). What is the application, standard, zone, equipment specification, etc?

Not finding much on web for products. With regards to suggestion of placing a standard PIR in an explosion proof enclosure with window: Wouldn't the window render the PIR ineffective?

No, but it can reduce the angle of coverage of the PIR sensor (depending on the size of the window and how far back the PIR sensor is mounted).

If possible (and if the application allows) I would suggest looking to see if you can mount a standard PIR sensor outside the hazardous area classified zone pointing in.

Wattstopper produces a microwave unit (FM-105) that can sense through building materials such as vinyl wall plates, glass, sheetrock, ect....

If the application permits... you could mount it inside of a rated enclosure given that the enclosure was a material other than metal and when someone walked in front of the enclosure, it would trigger the sensor. Load capacity is 0-800w of 120v ballast or 0-1200w of 277v ballast.

Or you could always use a low voltage occ sensor and put the power pack outside of the hazzardous area.

Unless the sensor is rated as intrinsically safe you need a device that has the correct Class, Division, Group and Temperature Code even if it is low voltage with the power pack outside the area.

I've used light level sensors in a windowed rated enclosure but not an occupancy sensor. The sensor and enclosre was self certified as by the sensor manufacture as rated for the area.

I too am looking for an occupancy sensor rated for a classified area. If you can get a sensor that is rated as intrinsically safe or has the right temperature code then the problem is solved.

Let's keep looking and talking to occupancy sensors manufactures and maybe we can get someone to rate one of their devices.
