Flange Manufacturing

For saving material & machining cost is it possible to manufacture a flange by rolling a flat?

Is it acceptable as per ASME CODE?

If yes what are the additional test required? (eg. full radiography as flange has welded joints etc.)

If no, why?

Yes, it is permissible - see following interpretation:

Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1992 Edition, 1993 Addenda); Appendix 2

Date Issued: May 24, 1994

File: BC94-109

Question(1): Is it permissible under the requirements of Appendix 2 in Section VIII, Division 1 to fabricate a flange by rolling a plate strip and welding the ends, with a full penetration double butt weld, if the requirements under UCS-79, UCS-56, UCS-57, and 2-2 are met?

Reply (1): Yes.

Question (2): Is it permissible to locate a bolt hole in the weld of the flange, as described in Question (1)?

Reply 2: Yes.

It is permited in not more than 4 segments of rolled plate. (Please correct if I am not right). (At this movement I can not spare time to find the reference and quote it... This is what I remember)

I can't comment/confirm that right now, other than - that would be a big flange, assuming appropriate length bars/flats were originally used.

Dear sir,

you are asking the flange mnufacture as per which standard and type of flange? ASME B16.5 then refer new relise ASME B16.5-2009.

You are right vidyadhar deodhar, and good answer XMech.

And I'd like to add that when we say ASME B16.5/ASME B16.47, we mean standard flanges where the flange is formed from only one piece and manufactured by forging (without any weldment). In addition to that, the code accepts to fabricate a non-standard flanges but must be accompanying with a full design calculations (10 pages at least) to meet all the code requirements.
