Calculating the Design Life Cycle of Pressure Vessels

07/09/2009 11:44 PM

Our client has asked to ensure & confirm that equipment viz pressure vessel, Heat Exchanger, Tanks are design for 25 year life cycle. How we can prove with the help of calculation that all equipments, Pressure vessel, Heat Exchanger and Tanks manufactured for process industry will work and designed for 25 years with the help of calculation.

The 4 big time-dependant failure mechanisms are:

Corrosion -

  • Determine an industry standard corrosion allowance from data provided by NACE and apply simple multiplication/division. For example, let's say that NACE specifies an average corrosion rate of 0.005" per year; for a design life of 25 years, you would require a minimum of 0.125". (of course this all gets thrown out the window if the vessel is operated outside of normal conditions or the user decides to perfrom an acid wash with hydroflouric acid during a shutdown)

Fatigue -

  • The parameters must be provided by the user, for example, how many anticipated start-ups and shut-downs, or how many batch pressurizations will be conducted on the vessel per year. Then perform fatigue analysis as per the design code.

Creep -

  • Relate design temperature to material stresses and see if they are in the time-dependant stress allowables in the design code. Apply fundamental creep analysis, for example, by using the ASM Specialty Handbook.

High Temperature Hydrogen Attack

  • Review API 941 to determine susceptiblity.

XMech,

good answer but the guest can also now use the suite from SolidWorks on "Heat Exchanger Design" and COMSOL Physics modeling to do a full material FEA, heat stress calc under the "what If" settings from each program...both are approved by ASME, NB and AEA for reactor designs.

But the customer must provide all operational and designs, then remain in them for any lifetime warrantee...nothing is ever 100% perfect no maatter how carefull one is. Thats why we always put in a ++ safety factor when in doubt about a customers operational methods over an expected lifetime...we build HX's upto 250 bar and 650 F ...never had one problem in 42 years touch wood.

You better be careful how you word the final answer. There is no way that anyone can estimate the life cycle of equipment such as that, there are too many variables. We have been asked the same question many times and then have been asked to guarantee it with a financial deposit.

Our standard answer is that we will and have used the best known engineering practices in the industry. And we would be happy to beef up the design for XXX $ USD.

During my ASME Boiler Code days, anything built to code for pressure vessels or power piping was built for an assumed 40 year life.

Periodic non-destructive testing of welds and wall thicknesses would be used to verify.

you've to define all the possible corrosion mechanisms and assess if the materials of construction can guarantee the 25 ys. If you have a general corrosion rate then you've to define the corrosion allowance as someone else said. But if you have a mechanisms like Stress corrosion, SSC of other localized corrosion then you've to define if the material if suitable for the operating environments and operating conditions.

we have order for design for tanks and fabrication if you can help us ,what the cost for total detial drawing and clculations for the bullets tanks.

. Horizontal Mounded Tanks for Yemen LNG The project involves engineering, fabrication, site assembly of 4 nos horizontal mounded tanks (bullet tanks) each with diameter of 6.5 m x 45.8 m t/t length. The scope that we intend to subcontract out will be the site assembly portion, commencing with receipt of pre-fabricated parts of the bullet tanks at nearest port of entry up to complete assembly of the bullets tanks at site including at the necessary testing. The most critical part of the work will be mainly welding of the sections of the bullet tanks at site, in accordance with fabrication drawings. The site is located at Marib field.

Does your company have the experience or capability to undertake such scope?

We look forward to your reply

The life of anything can be extended through the application of a maintenance regime.
