A Product of Canada

08/09/2009 2:33 PM

In much of the Eastern United states and likely elsewhere, the misguided US Fish and Wildlife Program (supplemented by the tree huggers) to reintroduce the supposedly nearly extinct Canadian Goose back into the folds of Naturedumb has resulted in our citizenry being knee-deep in goose poop. The growth of the problem has become excessively high as they have very high birth rates and have no natural predators; even large dogs are afraid of them. These creatures are generally disgusting, unclean (filthy) and unpleasant (nasty) to be around; however, local governments wont tackle the problem of erradicating them because of the environmental crowd.

Any suggestion on how to drastically reduce the numbers without use of a machette or shotgun, both of which are illegal here.

I guess I am just sick of the animal rights groups and lobbies that have forced the legislation on the populace (without a vote). You cant even protect yourself from wild animals if they attack you in your own yard.

I'm taking bets on how quickly this thread gets the 'axe' for political and critical subject matter that is not what this site addresses. CJM

For the last few years, the County of Strathcona in Alberta has been painting goose eggs with some type of oil in the spring. I'm not sure what type of oil they use but could probably find out if you are interested. This has been very effective in reducing the goose population here. Also, it is approved by the animal rights groups.

If you live in an area where only adult geese abound, this would not be helpful.

If I lived in an area with only adult geese, it might not be so bad, but every year each "couple" end up producing 12 or more offspring and these geese never leave the area in spite of the fact they can fly quite well. Could you please post the product name?

I have called the County office to find out the name of the product they use. So far I have had no reply. They do have a link which mentions a program conducted by a professional biologist with the proper permits.

Another option is "egg addling" described in this link.

Thank you. Egg addling seems to be a very good alternative. Thank you again.

How about a bow (or a crossbow)? Is it illegal too? You can take one by a very reasonable price from Del. It seems he is starting a good business manufacturing bows and crossbows. May ship abroad. I could make you the ship&handling service also for a very reasonable fee. Hey Del, what you think? Cheers.

I sympathize.

I'll go back to hunting geese if you will.

But I'm far enough west I'll only be doing Alberta good.

Please post the name of the oil used. We are inundated with Muscovy ducks in many South Florida neighborhoods. They will flock to any pet food that is fed to animals out side. Then they never leave. Side walks are always messy.

I just received a call from Tyler Hanson of the Engineering Department at Strathcona County. He was a bit reluctant to give me the name of the oil they use. They do not do it indiscriminately. It is all done under the watch of a professional biologist who keeps comprehensive notes on every goose nest where the eggs are treated. Apparently the permits are not easy for private citizens to obtain. The operation must be done under strict regulations pursuant to the "Migratory Bird Act" which is similar in Canada and the USA. The fines for tampering with migratory birds are quite severe, starting at about $10,000.

Tyler indicated that they do two or three repetitions of oiling the eggs in the spring of each year. They have been doing it for four years now. The name of the product they use is "Daedol Oil". It apparently prevents oxygen from moving through the shell, thus preventing the gosling from successfully hatching. It is available through a wildlife officer in our area.

Tyler is of the opinion that egg addling would fall into the same category as oiling. To do it without permission from the authorities could attract very significant penalties.

I know for a few years about 10 or 12 years ago, the city of Mississauga, Ontario, and the surrounding area, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, was rounding up thousands of birds every year and shipping them off by the transport truckloads to the east coast provinces mainly New Brunswick.

We had the same complaints here and finally city hall passed a bylaw for this drastic, but necessary action to be taken

I don't know if they still do it now, because the story isn't in the headlines anymore, like it was when they started out.

Maybe the New Brunswickers told us to stop doing it because they are inundated with the same problems!

HONK!

Funny. I was just going to write the same story as Loupy. Apparently the local authorities and tree huggers forgot that geese can fly, and returned to Toronto usually around the same time as the do-gooders. Our tax-money at work!
