JATROPHA CURCAS

08/25/2009 4:09 AM

Hi CR4,

I'm a student of Mechanical Engineering department in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. And I'm doing a research work on Jatropha Curcas.

Please can you send me the latest technological method used in the extraction of oil from Jatropha curcas and any other information from your end that can help me in this research work "Jatropha Curcas".

I shall be grateful if my request is given a favourable consideration.

Thanks alot

I'd start here, Jatropha curcas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

then continue my research on the web.

You should focus on the engineering required to execute high volume agricultural extension, harvesting, pre-processing harvest and collection logistics, and processing technologies that deliver products from conversions of the 100% biomass. While many hold focus upon the Crude Jatropha Oil and seed cake as the valuable outputs from the cultivation of Jatropha the reality is that there is no over all economic viability. One needs to harvest the complete renewable biomass and consider the technologies required to process the entire harvest values. Depending on the quality of equipment the extraction-extrusion methodology used by the soy industry (See: Triple A Oil extraction-extrusion) delivers a plus 90% oil extraction value while adjusting the extrusion pressure allows for the heat required to detoxify the seed cake material. When the seed cake is extruded into a well ventilated storage zone it expands upon contact with the air. This process following a little rest leads to the almost complete detoxification over a short period. If you review the cotton seed industry you can use their oil extraction (Chemical) as a good benchmark for extracting the maximum oil from the seeds. If you really want to add value process technologies that process biomass are the recommended route. Review the http://www.rentechinc.com/ processes. These are the best potential processing technologies for Jatropha.

Dear Friend You can use Soxhlet Extraction method. This is the best method for exraction of Jatropha seed oil. It can also extract by mechanical pressing. Detail procedure: 300ml of normal Hexane was poured into round bottom flask. 10g of the sample was placed in the thimble and was inserted in the centre of the extractor. The Soxhlet was heated at 60oc. When the solvent was boiling, the vapour rises through the vertical tube into the condenser at the top. The liquid condensate drips into the filter paper thimble in the centre, which contains the solid sample to be extracted. The extract seeps through the pores of the thimble and fills the siphon tube, where it flows back down into the round bottom flask. This was allowed to continue for 30 minutes. It was then removed from the tube, dried in the oven, cooled in the desiccators and weighed again to determine the amount of oil extracted. Further extraction was carried out at 30 minutes interval until the sample weight at further extraction and previous weight becomes equal. The experiment was repeated by placing 5g of the sample into the thimble again. The weight of oil extracted was determined for each 30 minutes interval. At the end of the extraction, the resulting mixture (miscella) containing the oil was heated to recover solvent from the oil.
