09/05/2009 3:55 AM

We are looking for a small but NOT portable weather station or weather logger for our power plant.

Any suggestions?

Depends on what you want to measure, at what quality, how you want to record your data and how should your station withstand sand storms, ice deposition, bird excrement and other manifestations of reality. Range of prices is US$150 to US$15000.

Davis is the most popular manufacturer of weather stations, and most are made for home installation, so they might not meet your needs. If a home station would work, check the equipment sections on some of the storm chaser or weather fora, such as stromtrack.org to see if someone has posted comments on the stations you are interested in.

One of the best sites to check is http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/index.asp.

Also, the National Weather Service has a cooperative weather observation program where people buy their own stations and feed the information to the NWS, but the stations must meet certain requirements for instrument quality and placement. I'm not recommending you join that program, but looking at their specs might be a good idea.

I am not associated with them, we just use some of their products.

They make some pretty quality equipment.

I use Peet Brothers stations at 3 power plants. They are very reasonably priced, with simple & reliable design. Communications, data logging and even a built-in web server are all available features. These units meet most US and international meteorological standards.
