Advance Warning Triangles

09/16/2009 2:37 PM

Hi all people: I am from Argentina and here is mandatory to have, in any passenger car, a pair of "advance warning triangle", like this that I attach here. The regulation that we use is from European origin and states that must resist 60 Km/h (aprox 40 miles/h) of wind. Really, a lot.

Is it mandatory also in USA? Something about wind resistance? I found an FMVSS regulation that prescribed 40 m/h, but for trucks only.

Every comment will be very useful.

Thanks in advance.

It's not mandatory to carry anything in your vehicle in the USA. You don't need to carry a spare tire, jack, lug-wrench, flares, triangle or any other safety device (however, I carry all of the above, and a first aid kit, flashlight, assorted tools, Blanket, emergency food/water rations, among other goodies in my vehicle). People here just rely on the fact that they can call AAA to help em out of a bind... quite risky if you ask me.

It is not mandatory here, except for trucks. I think the reason is roadways here are generally wide and have shoulders or breakdown lanes. It is prudent to carry such items although not mandatory.

In general our highways are designed with right of ways or broad areas immediate to the traveled portion for emergency stopping etc.. We do have rules regarding the need to stop a vehicle off the driven portion of the roadway for safety. Some states do require warning devices in mountainous areas and if stopped around blind turns etc..

I don't recall regulations of wind resistance but if you fail the attitude test you could receive a ticket

In parts of Europe you also have to have a reflective vest in the car, and if you pull over on the side of the highway and get out of the car you must wear it...

In Malaysia, people leave their cars where ever they break down, and with no warning of any kind. Intersections, middle of the free way, where ever. On the busy street in front of my neighborhood a guy left broken down car sitting in the main traffic lane and it sat there for three weeks.

In the US, each state sets it's own standards for motor vehicles, so it can and will vary based on what state you are in.

Steve, if that was in front of my house, I would have been removing parts before sunrise.

Any idea what an 84 Renault Fuego is worth? I just bought another house, and it was hidden in a shack.

The only 'Mandatory' equipment for passenger vehicles I know of is tire chains for crossing the high passes in the 'Rockies' during winter. Other than that, we are left to be as foolish as we can get.

Beach Access equipment is regulated by State.

Gabriel:

Only displayed on slow moving (traveling no more than 25 MPH) vehicles such as farm equipment (all equipment, tractors, wagons combines, ect...) , and it is mandatory and has to be displayed.

Gabriel,

I assume you are referring to the triangles that you carry back some distance so drivers will know there is a car ahead to give them a greater opportunity to safely manuever to avoid you. I am sure it is appreciated.

It is common sense to have an advanced warning triangle that doesn't move when cars and trucks pass or the wind blows. the laws are made when common sense does not prevail.

The standard where I live is to carry the registration and proof of insurance.

Federal and State Departments of Transportation has rules about equipment on domestic and imported cars so it is not so much a demand on us as it is on the manufacturer and importer.

It is rare to find a car without 4 way emergency flashers so no triangle.

I have switch selectable left and right marker lights for collision avoidance that can operate for many hours without draining the battery.

On our Interstate and State highways we are not allowed to leave the car or walk on the side of the highway. A patrol car goes by about every half hour.

My car has no spare tire and my tires are designed to run when flat an an indicator lights to warn of low pressure. Also the front wheels are 17 inch and the rear are 18 inch so a spare would not make sense. There are tools for removing a wheel if needed. My Nav system can be used to find and guide me to the nearest service if an unusual event should occur. Cel phone is easier. The 24 hour emergency service number works well.
