NPT Threads and BSP Threads

09/24/2009 2:06 AM

Dear Sir,

Some queries on BSP and NPT type of threading - -

1. Can BSP and NPT type of threading both be tapered ie the material removal during threading be different between the starting of the threading and the end of the threading?

2. If so please explain what will be the angle of tapering in BSP and NPT types in which ever type applicable.

3. I presume that the 60 deg angle of the threading in NPT has not made it to be designated as called as a NATIONAL PIPE TAPER.

Please clarify.

Thanks

K. Muthukrishnan, India

  1. Yes. Depends on the usage. BSP can be parallel external and parallel internal for non pressure retaining or tapered external with either tapered or parallel internal for pressure retaining. NPT is tapered as its name suggests.
  2. 1 in 16 on diameter for NPT. Do not know BSP offhand, but the thread form is Whitworth. Someone out ther will know.
  3. 60 degrees is the angle between the sides of an NPT.
  4. OK there was no question 4, but I strongly suggest that if you are going to work with any of this stuff that you buy yourself a copy of the Machinery Handbook. Almost any edition will do. I do not have mine with me right now, but mine is from around the late 1960's. It was first published just before or just after the first world war if I remember rightly, so there are any number of second hand copies around.

Except when compared to BSPT which represents British standard taper pipe as opposed to BSP British straight pipe
