Valve Inspection Technologies

09/29/2009 1:35 PM

Hi everybody,

In case of Inspection for valves of forged and casting body construction can ultrasonic inspection be conducted instead of radography in general for the same acceptance criteria and % inspection.

Please suggest if any and please correct me if my interpretation in this case is wrong.

Thanks in advance.

UT may work on forgings depending on configuration, but probably wont work on castings due to the coarseness of the grain. By the time you get the frequency low enough for clear signal through the casting (assuming bronze or cast iron), your minimum detectability will be too large to be of value. For cast bronze, I would look more towards an eddy current solution. For cast iron, radiographs will be cheaper than eddy current induced ultrasound.

Section 8, ASME B16.34 allows UT in lieu of rediography
