Why Do I Get a Buzzing Sound From My Speakers When Using the Mouse Scroll Wheel?

10/06/2009 9:45 PM

With any partial rotation of the mouse scroll wheel (either direction), I get a squeaky buzzing kind of sound coming from my PC speakers.

It's not really that irritating, and it's not very loud - probably around 1/5 normal sound volume, but I'm just wondering if this is common and what causes it. Anyone?

Probably defective noise suppression capacitors on the motherboard or in the mouse. I'd start by opening the mouse and checking if any capacitors are installed inside it. If not, follow the connections to the mouse and speakers to the motherboard and look for issues with cracked or poorly soldered components in that area.

One of the drawbacks of removing lead from solder (going green) is that the bonding between solder and components has become less reliable. You will need a powerful magnifying glass to inspect carefully. If you need to understand what a good solder joint looks like, you can do a search for "solder joints".

Hi NotUrOrdinaryJoe,

Thanks for replying. This is not something that bothers me and certainly not something I will have my computer down and apart for while troubleshooting and repairing.

I will check the mouse caps (if any), however.

Could there be any chance that this is interference of some sort? Pointer movement is no problem, just when turning the wheel. Also, I have a separate sound card - it's not integrated onto the MB. I just don't see how the scroll wheel action goes through the system and gets to the speakers.

Anyway,thanks for your help.

Mike

maybe your microphone is picking up the noise and retransmitting it?

Try isolating the problem by starting with another mouse.

Hi Guest,

Thanks for replying! I did try another mouse - same thing! I have since started another thread, containing many more specific observations, here:

Trying to figure this out, trivial though it may be, is driving me nuts.

Hi Mikerho,

Are you able to move the speakers further away?

Each speaker has a magnetic field and it is a little like the 'feed back' you get with a mike and speaker on stage? I would guess your mouse in wireless, and or your speakers are very close to where you work? If you have conventional wired speakers, do you have the wire or part of it wrapped round the speaker?

Are you sure it is not the mum or dad mouse fighting with a bumble bee?

BTW, do you refer to the speakers on a laptop or desktop?

Take care and good luck.

Hi babybear,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried moving the speakers closer and farther, but no change in the effect.

If you think of anything, please let me know! Even though this effect is not irritating in itself, not being able to figure out what causes it is.

Morning all,

I've encountered such behavior on an old PC of mine, i noticed that this has nothing to do with the mouse, but with the processor. The scrolling is causing a rush into the processor, IMHO, it's a filter problem in the mother board.

Just got out of another blog, where one person was going nuts for the same problem; he tried many diferent things: changed operating systems, changed mouse and keyboard for wireless etc. but didn't help.

Guess what; It was the microphone (software) driver, which wasn't even connected !

He installed another driver but it caused no sound features working, then he went back the original driver and voila ! mouse scroll sounds went away.

Hi guest,

That is great to hear!

But if anyone else has this problem all they need to do is, click on sound or volume settings and minimise the mic input/output.

Take care.

!!!!!!!!!!!

OK - I just "muted" my microphone input on my sound card mixer console, and it went away!

Thanks so much for the input!

The thing that is still bugging me though is why the problem was only happening when in Outlook or any Web browser - nothing else.

Anyway, thanks!

Mike

Hi Mikerho,

I am really pleased you/we found the answer. Something like that I know people often 'live' with rather than looking into it, because they do not know where to look or, what words to search for on-board their own computer to find what will help?

The thing that is still bugging me though is why the problem was only happening when in Outlook or any Web browser - nothing else.

With ref' to your piece above in bold. It may be because the mic' is not 'active' until you click on something which brings up the browser or Outlook, which in turn may be using the Browser in the background to facilitate searches and to reach and call other Apps as necessary, such as the CD or Video Apps or any of the 'video or sound Player' Apps, like Flash?

It would be interesting to find out by trial and error what apps are or need to be switched on and thus that sound will return if you have not muted it?

Take care.

I had the same problem. I fixed it like this: Double click the volume icon - options - properties and checked all the boxes. I then muted them one at a time. When I muted the PC Beep the noise disappeared! :)

Hi Guest,

Nice one there! And well found.

Not many would think to do it like that and perhaps would just turn the sound off?

Good luck

I had the same problem. but my fix was different. my speaker was being powered by a usb port on the computer. i switched the usb to one coming out of my monitor and voila. no buzzing sound when i used my mouse scroll. seems to me it was a power/filter issue which the monitor was avoiding.

niggly but fixed.

Cheers
