Devry Online Degree Feedback

I once hired a graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology to work as an electronics technician, if that's the same outfit about which you write, and I wasn't at all impressed by his knowledge. It may have had nothing to do whatsoever with the institute's ability to provide good lessons, instruction, etc.

Personally, I would try to go to a local tech school before taking mail-order or on-line courses. There is a lot to be said for person-to-person instruction/collaboration where learning is concerned.

On line or in person you only get out what you put in. Having said that, any engineering program should include some "hands on" training. So if the sub-discipline within electrical engineering you wish to pursue is computer and/or computer networking itself, I see no problem obtaining an online class from an accredited school, for your lab material will be at your fingertips. But I'd be a little apprehensive about a power plant engineer that got his degree purely on line.

As far as DeVry specifically, I've had no contact with any alumni from there so I cannot comment. I would search out what accreditation if any the program that interests you may have.

The only thing I can tell you is Devry has been around for well over 70 years. As an institute, it concentrates on technical subjects and little if any on liberal arts type subjects. It is probably more suited towards technicians rather than engineers.

DeVry = Rip Off. Simple enough for you? There is not a personnel director at any major employer that will recognise a "degree" from this bunch of crooks.

DeVry is not an accredited program toward an ENGINEERING Degree. It is a technical school which is fine if that is what you are interested in but no university I know of will accept the coursework done at DeVry towards an engineering degree.

NCEES will not accept it either in terms of sitting for your FE or PE.

My younger brother graduated from DeVry University last with his Bachelors of Science in Engineering Technology. He had job offers during his last semester, and went into a $55k job one week after graduating. He also took some of his math and English classes online. He worked really hard on his courses. He moved in with my husband and me so he could cut back on the number of hours he worked every week. We were skeptical at first, but found out that DeVry is accredited, and my brother looked in to Georgia Tech - he can transfer almost all of his classes and complete his Engineering degree in 2 semesters, and his employer will pay for him to do it.

Engineering Technology programs are accredited on campus-by-campus. The table in #Locations lists accreditation status of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs by the US Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board.

So, only a small number of the campuses are ABET accredited and the online courses, which is what the OP asked about, are not accredited. Thanks Bill.

Geez. Makes some of the comments by others about DeVry look like heresay rather than experience. I would agree with 2 points made in comments here: 1)You get out what you put in to it, and 2) hands on experience is a great boon for any student. S/he will be considered over someone who doesn't have any. Getting that first real job in electronics without a B.S. degree can be a challenge. I know, I persisted (badgered) a small computer company in the mid-'70's to hire me when I had no "digital" experience in my background. Once you get a couple of companies (and a few years) in your work history, that becomes more important than the degree you may or may not list on your resume.

We have traveled a similar road Kimosabe. Things might have been easier, but maybe in the end it's a little like a boy being named Sue, as the song says. You might just be a little stronger for the struggle.
