If anyone is interested I was in a group that did VVT as a project for an automotive engineering elective at NCSU in my Mechanical Engineering Curriculum. Send me a PM with an email and I can send the Powerpoint to you, we felt it was very comprehensive at the time 2006 (i think) and covered bmw vanos, honda-vtec, and any other types we could find research on.
