Audio Compression Principles, Objectives and Characteristics

Considering the benefit in use of audio compression and the utility of lossless codecs, may these codecs be employed to the benefit of the listener.

Certainly, in fact I'm re-ripping my entire CD collection to FLAC even though it will grow in disk space size 3x to 4x. Hard drive space is so cheap today that the tradeoff of quality for disk space just doesn't make sense anymore. I can usually hear the difference between 320kbps mp3 and Redbook CDDA but I can rarely hear the difference between FLAC and CDDA.
