Selecting Anemometers

11/04/2009 6:30 PM

I am building a sensor array that will simulate a 3kW solar array. I will be taking voltage and temperature readings throughout the array and sending it to a DAQ to be monitored and logged. I need to get an anemometer to get wind speed and send it to the same DAQ instead of its own logger. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced anemometer that will send wind speed data (analog or digital) to any DAQ?

Does the "pulses" that are sent out from the magnet during every rotation (spinning cup type anemometer) send a voltage or current down the wire?

Check www.davisnet.com They do a lot of such instruments including complete stations.

Dear V:

Check out Ebay for some very good buys on Total Wireless Weather Stations. A few months ago I bought a Zephyr Instruments system that included the temp., anemometer, humidity, rain gauge, and wind direction sensors that transmit a wireless signal (I believe up to 300 feet line of sight or not) to a LCD battery operated receiving unit (touch screen no less!!!!) that is plugged into my PC through a USB port so I can data log everything including indoor temps and humidity! I love this thing and should have bought one years ago!!!! I also received 2 different weather data acq. software CDs with the system (one was a free bonus and is much much better than the one that usually comes with the system). the only thing I need to buy in addition to the system was a piece of 1/2 copper tubing, some copper anchoring brackets and concrete expansion anchors to install it on my chimney next to the DISH satellite receiver. The pole that was supplied with the weather system was way too short for my needs as I had to get the instruments above the influence of the satelitte dish and the heat plume coming out of the chimney when the boiler is running. I do not for one moment regret buying this weather system. Toll free Tech help from the manufacturer was fantastic!!!!

My 7.56 KW Solar PV system will be installed within a week or two, depending on the contractor's schedule and the weather. Of course I added a MSA Data logger to the package so I can merge the solar and weather data.....makes for a great record when it comes to selling this house someday because everything about it's performance will have been documented!!!!

On top of the Solar PV system, I'll be installing my DIY Solar thermal system project next spring once I'm done fabricating everything.....it'll include 50 encapsulated glass solar thermal collector tubes supercharged with linear curverd Fresnel Lenses that'll tremendously boost the capture of sun's radiant energy to between 10X to 15x Suns.....I still have to do the experiments to verify the lense manufacturer's claims.....I'm looking into a Dallas Semiconductor (now Maxim) one-wire sensor & control system and their SCADA system.

Just letting you know what's out there that won't cost you an arm and a leg!!!!
