Valve Timing Volvo 960

11/06/2009 11:34 PM

Hello Gentlemen and Thank You very much for your information on my previous related question

I am having trouble fitting the Timing Belt to the timing marks

I Set camshaft timing mark to 45 degrees inwards

Then set crankshaft to timing mark located about 30 degrees past Top Dead Centre

Unfortunately the pulley wheeels must have been moved because the camshafts collide with the crankshaft at this position.

Is there any way to set the valve timing without the using the timing marks

I can get the pistons rocking on top dead centre. But what about the camshafts

Your help is greatly appreciated

Hi Planet of the Apes:

Rather answer questions than starting new threads. (Talk to us man!!!)

Is there any play on a pulley?

What are the key-way's and keys like?

Hello Hendric

The guy in the garage located the timing belt in accordance to the 3 timing marks. Then tightened the top cover down onto the camshaft, squashing the exaust valves on cylinder 6.

When the timing marks are lined up, pistons 1 and 6 are at top dead centre.

I replced the damaged valves and now neither him nor I are inclined to do it again.

I had the idea that all the pistons should be in the mid bore position when the camshaft is placed, such that the valves are not pressed onto the camshaft.

My question is are the timing marks correct (ie piston at top dead centre) or has the camshaft pulley been moved.

Is it normal to tighten the camshaft pulley down onto valves and press them open

Are you not certain the engine WAS running with pulleys as are now? Is it even possible for pulleys to be installed 'off-time'?

Be absolutely certain you are rotating the engine in the proper direction as the procedure calls for.

If the engine has been disassembled, then you have to start from scratch in timing the cams. Follow the maintenance procedure exactly--have to take cams off the heads, crank TDC, then install each cam in the position specified in the procedure.

Hello

I have removed the cylinder head to replace the valves and have not replaced it yet. The previous belt broke so we have no model to copy

The procedure is simple enough. The 3 timing marks (twin camshaft) are lined up with the timing marks on the engine. very easy. shame the valve got squashed.

From your reply you say that you tighten down the camshaft to the piston when it is at TDC, which is what we did. I heard that you should locate the pistons in mid bore to avoid collision with the valves.

We did not put any grease on the valve lifter

Thank you for the diagram

I replaced the camshafts in accordance with the timing marks and when tightened down the exaust valves in cylider 6 were squashed.

when the timing marks are followed pistons 1 and 6 are at top dead centre, so the rocking valve caught on the piston

I wonder if the crankshaft pulley has been taken off and replaced in the wrong position or is it correct to tighten the camshaft down onto a valve at TDC

Any light on this matter is greatly appreciated

I'm not familiar with this engine ...but it's entirely normal in my experience to have 2 pistons at or around top dead center when aligning timing marks and replacing the head.

One of the cylinders will have both/all valves shut ( firing stroke) ..the other will have the inlet valve/s shut and the exhaust valve/s closing ( exhaust stroke ).

It's almost impossible to diagnose... via this medium ...what the problem is with your rebuild.
Run back thru your mind ...is it possible that you have inadvertently swapped the camshafts around?

You may have to bite the bullet and find a real live Volvo expert.

Its the 6 cylinder fitted to the 1994 volvo 960. Aluminium and straight 6 cylinder (not the traditional Volvo engine)

Hi PApes,

I take it you do not know what the engine is, as you say it is not the traditional engine? Is that right?

Telling the detail of the model number 1994 Volvo 960, has no relevance if it does not have the original engine, surely?

Can you say the exact origin of the engine please my friend?
