Hi elmbrouk

If possible actually working in a warehouse would answer your questions.

I need to know what Country you are in and roughly what area, to allow me to focus the search to a more local area for you.

If you do not want to publish these details PM me and they will be send to my Private Message holder at CR4.

You can do some basic 'thinking' about this Stock Control, by thinking about how you might control goods in and out, including dated stock such as food products, and items with 'sell by' dates. Often warehouses are arranged differently when dealing with the same products, this is simply making the best use of available space. Space will always be limited to some degree so keeping control means keeping some kind of layout of the warehouse, especially important in very large stores or stores of many different types of very small items.

All pallet areas should be listed and if at all possible, enough space be allocated to each product group. You can label rows, or larger areas, and when stock of very small items then perhaps use shelving or list what you have in stock on each 'mixed' pallet.

You can do this on a computer, for which you can buy stock control programmes, or use a book to keep lists, dates of expected deliveries, and a complete listed detail of what and where you have all your stock.

You must keep all receipts, bills, delivery notes, stock size and type, which is important because unless you stock control in a particular factory, the stuff you order and the stuff you get delivered may be slightly different from month to month, even though it is supposed to be the same! Examples are where you are dealing with Paint. The paint has many kinds of coloured 'whites' for instance and you need to list the differences and BS (British Standards numbers).

In Pharmaceuticals ordering the same item from different suppliers will often give a different coloured product. Size, and type will probably be the same but, shape of the boxes and what is in them can vary, so all these details must be traceable. Everything else in as it should be apart from the colour and shape.

Many stock control systems if not all use Bar Codes. This simplifies the job but, you still need to check the individual items to see they are as listed by the Bars.

Hi elmbrouk,

Thank you for your reply post.

Sounds like you were luck enough to get what seems to be a good offer and good start in a job?

It really depends on what size the area you have control over as to how you arrange stock. It can be any size from a small room to the size of a football pitch! And, if and when you are in control you can arrange things as you want, right? But, in case you are ill or on holiday and because it makes things easier anyway, it is crucial you keep a written schedule of stock, when you expect more, etc.

Good luck.
