How to Size a Condenser

01/29/2010 3:35 AM

What size of condenser do i have to use if i have an AHU with the following specs:

Inlet air - 30 deg C

Blower capacity - 12 000 CMH

Inlet chilled water - 7 deg C and 55 psi

Required cooling capacity - 30 TR

Air conditio room should be maintain at 24 deg C

No air recirculation, all fresh air (30 deg C)

Being American, I will address this my familiar units.

The heat transferred is 30 TR = 360,000 Btu/h. In addition, the condenser must reject the heat of compression. This depends on system conditions, but for AC it will often be about 1 HP per TR. One HP = 2545 Btu/h, thus 30 HP = 76,350 Btu/h. So the total heat rejection by the condenser is 436,350 Btu/h. (436 MBH in common condenser terminology.)

Next you need to know the condensing temperature of the refrigerant. For an air-cooled condenser, you compare this temperature with the dry-bulb air temperature, selecting a condenser from a manufacturer's data. For an evaporative condenser, you use the wet-bulb air temperature.

These temperature data are available from ASHRAE or other publications, or weather bureau data for the location. There's lots of stuff available on-line for this, depending on how prominent the location is. Typically you look for the nearest big city to your actual location.

What type of condesnser ,Air cooled or water cooled you plan to install??.In any A.C book concept of Heat Rejection Ratio is very well explained. Accordingly you can select and size the condenser. Condser is a Heat Exchanger. If you want to design the condenser use LMTD or effetiveness NTU method .
