Will PVC Glands Nulify Eddy Currents in Single Core Termination?

03/12/2010 3:55 PM

hi,

I want to know whether the use of pvc gland in metallic gland plate will nullify the effect of eddy current in single core cable termination.

Rightnow i have a problem in one of my site where people had terminated single core cable by making holes in metallic gland plates and used pvc glands as it is unarmoured cable but cables are in trefoil arrangement that too only in cable trays and in the cable entry they have seggregated cable according to phases. there are 9 runs of single core 300sq.mm cable per phase.

kindly help me out. just want to know use of pvc gland will no effect of eddy current or magnetic path in cable entry point.

regards.

saimahadev.

Dear all,

You can continue using PVC cable gland for single core cables. For gland plate, you must use nonferrous material such as aluminum, brass or plastic such as PVC should be used for single core cables.

Eddy current will be induced even in nonferrous metal, but it does not have hysteresis loss. Heat produced eddy current in nonferrous metal is negligible.

Regards

Are you measuring any temperature increase around the cables in operation with the present configuration? If not, why do you have a problem?

If you can cut a line between the glands, you will break the eddy current path, alternatively is as mentioned a non metallic gland plate is required.
