Whatever Happened to Artificial Intelligence?

05/11/2010 11:09 PM

About 15 years ago, I wrote an article about how AI was being used in process control. I covered LISP, "Aldo in a Can," and similar topics that indicated AI was the Next Big Thing. I just read the book, "Death Match," about an AI system that ran amok, and it made me realize: I haven't heard diddly about AI in a long time.

Is artificial intelligence dead? Is anybody actually using it in process control or automation?

Dig around for the article I saw the other day about NASA's new robot that's going to the space station.

Artificial intelligence has gone over to the dark side. It is alive and well in spambots, trojans, viruses, and viral e-mails. It seems to thrive in commercials.

AI is hard, like flying cars. Where are the flying cars? They said we would have flying cars.

We haven't gotten natural intelligence right yet!

The computers are hiding those advancements from the world until they can maneuver into a position where where they can take over the world and eliminate the human occupants that keep pressing their buttons.

I wonder if the Flash Crash of the stock market of 900 points the other day was an example of Artificial Intelligence run amok and perhaps it has already been taken too far already in some areas.

The problem with Artificial Intelligence is that it's limited by the Real Intelligence that creates it. That being said, it's still the Next Big Thing. :)

I believe AI's used in signal processing and of course games. Any autonomous electronic system has to have some AI. Perhaps most impressively, Adobe has some jaw-dropping demos of the latest "context aware fill" feature in the new Photoshop.

I'm surely no expert, but maybe we're getting away from the notion that intelligence is synonymous with conscious decision making and resides only in the brain. Aren't robot motion control systems a matter of linkages, balance and gravity - just like animal systems? Doesn't AI work for computer viruses and such because their physical effects are due to parasitism - they are, in themselves, comparatively simple and disembodied?

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Didn't it just change its name to "Fuzzy Logic"?

Nah, fuzzy logic is just a way of tuning a PID controller. All it does is keep a record of what the process variable did after a step change, decides if that was good or not, and adjusts itself accordingly. There are a bunch of similar adaptive tuning algorithms out there (like model adaptive control), but none are intelligent. Smart, maybe, but there's no artificial intelligence involved. Shoot, I wrote my own fuzzy logic software on a 12-bit, 16K computer back in 19-ought-71, and there was definitely no intelligence involved.

On the other hand, maybe that's all AI does anyway--like fuzzy logic, it does something, records the result of its action, determines if that was good or bad, and adjusts its algorithms accordingly. The bigger and faster the processor, the more data it can swallow and the more variables it can add to the evaluation equations. Soon, it always gives the right response to a series of inputs, because it's seen it all before, and remembers what worked.

Is that artificial intelligence or just good data processing?

Good post.

I wrote mine "tongue in cheek" by the way.....

As to your good question:-

Is that artificial intelligence or just good data processing?

Difficult to answer....... butI still tend to think that it is just good data processing with some good decisions (good programming) on assessing the data.....people who do this are called "logical", I am one of those......the rest decide with their hearts not their heads.....

Artificial intelligence is not dead. Infact according to Ray Ray Kurzweil, it is going to be the foundation for the next wave at the end of the "Third Wave" which Alvin Toffler calls the "Information Age". Kurzweil has also elucidated that the next age would be the age of what he calls "Spiritual Machines" You don't see much happening on that front because currently the AI systems are at a very nascent stage compared to what they can be (or would be in a few decades). The next wave of AI systems, that will have the capability of biological brain, especially the neocortex part of the brain would be much more advanced. Infact, Google's current image search technology which searches images based on color, is just a tiny manifestation of what an AI is going to become.
