Live Video of Doyle Rotary Being Machined

07/03/2010 7:47 PM

I had previously asked about how to stream live videos. We decided to go with ustream.tv for the live feed of the machining process of our motor.

We are currently machining the second half of the cylinder block. Live video of the machining can be found here. You can also ask questions in the chat area and we will answer them as soon as we can.

The part has nearly 24 hours of machining left so you can view the machining until about 6:00 PM CST July 4th.

The first half of machining involves removing excess material. After that the machine will begin the rough and finish passes between the cylinders.

Thank you. It is nice to watch for a few moments.

After a while it does seem to be at a "watch paint dry" pace. I'll check back later.

Thank you for showing us. You probably take it very easy because it is a prototype?

I hope you got a price for the end product, not by the hour? I keep my thumbs up to

a successful product.

We could run the machine faster but we wanted to give people time to see the machining live.

The machine is ours. Having someone else machine it would have cost a small fortune. But we did wait for the weekend because of how long it takes to cut.

After this the part will still require a lot of machining. The cylinders will need to be machined and honed. The center section (crankshaft area) of the block will need to be machined out. And there are a bunch of other holes (such as oil passages) that will need to drilled.

We hoped that the stream would be interesting and are happy that you all like it. We plan to do this through out the machining and assembly. We hope to have a higher quality video feed when we fire up the prototype for the first time (but that will be over half a year from now).

That explains a lot. I didn't want to write that the CNC machine wasn't performing. Thanks again for involving us.

If I recall correctly a while back you were asking for help streaming video on the web. Are you willing (or have you) posted the details on how you did this? A lot of things can be very time consuming to research but very easy to do (especially in Linux). It would be nice to make it easy for others to stream projects to the web.

Thanks,

Bruce

It was actually pretty easy but keep in mind that I used a computer running Windows XP. The website I used (ustream.tv) allows you to easily stream video from a webcam free. Ustream claims to allow higher definition video but our upload speed limits the quality we can upload.

JUST WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SHOW US. When i was an apprentice i was machining parts simaler to this on a bridgeport and all by hand. we did not have digital readouts then or CNC controls.

The program used to machine one side of the block was composed of 117,000 lines of code. Essentially this means that the location of the tool was changed 117,000 times. On the finish passes, all three axes were moved at the same time to achieve the nice three-dimensional finish that can be seen in the pictures. Perhaps you do have the uncanny ability to move the tool in all three dimensions as quickly as the CNC mill can while also maintaining the accuracy. We do not.

We ran the machine very slowly to give people time to check-in and see the progress of the block. If we were machining this part for a customer, one half of the block would have been machined in 6 hours. I can not see a person doing this.

Regardless of whether or not you have the ability to outpace a CNC mill, we did not show this video to flex our machining muscles in front of an audience. The reason we are showing so much about our engine is that we want to set ourselves apart from the other inventors. We have followed several new engines through the years and all of the groups claiming to be behind the next revolution in the world post questionable stats and then hide behind a veil of secrecy.

We want to be open and give it to you straight. We haven't given made up or computer generated figures about how much more efficient our engine is. We try to lay all of the information we have out in front of you so that you can judge for yourself.

So we show the videos and release so much information so that those interested have something to think about. The status reports also let the interested individuals know that we are continuing on. We've been on the other end of this situation and are always annoyed by the long silences from the inventors.

Excellent video, method and attitude. I'll be following.

May I suggest (request) that when you post a new thread with any updates, you add a comment to this thread, so that interested members don't miss any new stuff, please? I've been out of touch for a few days, so may have missed something.

I can definitely do that starting with: New Video

This video shows the flow of gases in the Doyle Cycle. Because our engine is so 3-dimensional it is hard to make a simple diagram illustrating the cycle (hard to show the passage between the intake cylinders and the power cylinders). In the animation we showed the motor with stationary cylinders and a rotating crank. So just take the animation and pretend the cylinders are actually rotating around a crankshaft.

Tomorrow morning (CST) my dad plans to cut the cylinders in the block. I'm back at school 5 hours away so I will be talking him through the setup of the live feed. He will probably only be able to cut 2 cylinders a day so he will be attacking it whenever he has spare time throughout the next weeks. I will try to let you know as soon as possible before he starts cutting each time.

Thanks for the update. Coincidentally, I was thinking about your project today. A couple of colleages went to a manufacturing exhibition, and came back with tales of the machines and machining operations they'd seen. I wanted to show them some "real action"!
