UK Libel Law Reform - Latest

07/12/2010 10:35 AM

Content of an e-mail I received today:

___________________________________

Dear Friends

You called for a Libel Reform Bill – and the Government has listened.

On Friday, Justice Minister Lord McNally said the Government has listened to the 52,000 supporters of the Libel Reform Campaign and has made a "firm commitment to action" to protect freedom of speech and the public interest with a bill to be published in the New Year. The Bill will be the first attempt from a Government in more than a century to undertake fundamental reform of our libel laws.

It's an incredible success for our campaign – and it's thanks to your support.

The announcement was made during the second reading debate of Lord Lester's Private Members Defamation Bill. You can watch the debate as it happened here: www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=6412 and there is a round up of coverage and reaction to the news here: www.libelreform.org/news/465-9th-july-2010-government-announces-libel-reform-bill

But we don't know how radical the Government's bill will be, and we don't know whether it will ensure that writers like Simon Singh, NGOs like Global Witness, or medical professionals like Dr Peter Wilmshurst won't face libel actions in the future. That's why we need your continued support.

Many of you have been emailing and Tweeting about this already – please do continue to spread the word. Over the next three months we need to double the signatories to our petition so new MPs know how important this issue is. We have a lot of work to do together to make sure the Government brings forward a bill that really will make the law fairer and give greater protection to free speech. Bloggers, science writers, NGOs and small publications still face threats and bankruptcy under the current laws, as illustrated by two bloggers, Alex Hilton and John Gray, who are at the High Court in London today fighting to have a libel case against them thrown out. You can follow the case here www.jackofkent.blogspot.com.

Best Sile and Mike

Very good news John. Shutting people up, just to keep the legal eagles happy has always been a thorn in my side. They have a lot to answer for and still have clout. Who knows, maybe those destructive forces will be put in their rightful places one day.

More good luck to you's all, Ky.

THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE - unless you consider free speech 'political'.

Have you followed any of the links???

It is annoying John, I know. Just take a deep breath like I did. It doesn't help much, I know, but it gives one a sense of what we are up against, if just for a breaths moment. I thought of the OT button but it would use up space and Guest is using up too much already.

Forgive them! They know not what they are doing. But will he notice that I just breached another rule. Possibly not as the country he is from has other belief systems to have hang ups on.

Hope all goes well, Ky.

The problem is separating the politics and the politicians from free speech.

But you are no longer "of your kind". You're still in Guest think. Now you're a fully paid-up registered member. You've got balls - and know what to do with them .

Now listen here. It took me a day to get over your completely irrelevant posting and in good military style I have even taken a bit of extra time to get over your remark and only make a complaint now. Yes my supreme leader some one is standing up to this crap!!

How dare you post from an anonymous position and slander, criticize others. Who do you think you are? You should be ashamed of yourself for your response towards people who try and make this a better world.

No face, no name, no knowledge, no guts, no intellect, no country of origin, although your use of capitals is a dead give away. Please learn how to turn off the caps lock and then come back. Maybe you should then sign in as "The Traitor". You have no idea how 'unasked for' this ignorant remark of yours is.

Sorry admin just couldn't help myself, Ky.

Thanks Jaxy for putting me on the straight and narrow. You had every right to edit my post. I Apologize to you and the team if I have taken this a bit too far.

Being patronized by an anonymous guest has triggered this and even sleeping over it had not calmed my first reaction. I find it excellent style that you have informed me and the others of the editing.

Well done, I feel better now and hope you can forgive my out burst.

Have a great day, Ky.

Now there's a fine example of a political comment in response to an apolitical post.

Never been to Yemen, but I've been to some pretty good parties over here in Britland. Didn't meet too many devils (tho' sometimes there's a very fine line between an angel and a devil).

Try to keep your laughing head on - you'll like yourself more.

What a silly bunch of posts

I'm often 'disappointed' in the literacy and reading skills on CR4 - but never before have I seen people unable to tell the word LAW from POLITICS

Look the words are even different lengths.

Dumb and Dumber

Here is what LAW is about;

Legal systems elaborate rights and responsibilities in a variety of ways. A general distinction can be made between civil law jurisdictions, which codify their laws, and common law systems, where judge made law is not consolidated. In some countries, religion informs the law. Law provides a rich source of scholarly inquiry, into legal history, philosophy, economic analysis or sociology. Law also raises important and complex issues concerning equality, fairness and justice. "In its majestic equality", said the author Anatole France in 1894, "the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread."
