Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

07/29/2010 5:47 PM

Dear Members and guests

As some of you might know in my spare time I paint and have done so for decades. Recently I published a few of my works in Private CR4 Mails and have received some encouraging feed back.

I became an online member of http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/ky-wilms.html. I tried to download some images and had huge problems with establishing an online Gallery. I did contact the organisers of fineartamerica but received no reply to my inquiry about what I could be doing wrong.

I then contacted another member of this site, who lives near me, and asked him about how he did it. He told me that they demand high resolution images, at least 20MB's.

I took the images with a Canon digital IXUS 65 (on super fine position) and end up with the images being about 2 to 3 MB's. I am using Microsoft Picture Manager for the editing and seem to be loosing quality.

Here my question: Do I need a new camera or a different photo shop manager? Please help me out if you can, Thanks in advance, Ky.

I found this info on your camera and Maximum Image Size is 2816 x 2112 Pixels shuld be able to do it . I think you just need to save it as a PNG file but not sure to get the 20 MB. They want the 20 because any lower is poor quality for pictures.

Good Luck KY!

Canon Digital IXUS 65 Specifications & Features

  • 6 Megapixels
  • 3 x Optical Zoom
  • 4 x Digital Zoom
  • 12 x Combined Zoom
  • 3cm Focusing Distance
  • Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Fluorescent H and Custom White Balance Settings
  • 3.0" P-Si TFT, approx. 173,000 pixels
  • Auto, Manual, On and Off Flash Modes
  • Red Eye Reduction
  • Maximum Image Size 2816 x 2112 Pixels
  • 640 x 480, 30fps Movies up to 1GB
  • PictBridge Compatible
  • Secure Digital (SD) Card - 16MB SD Card supplied
  • Rechargeable Li-ion Battery
  • Approximate Weight 145g

Digital images

• To be supplied on CD (an image small enough to e-mail will not be good enough quality).

• If given a choice, please provide digital images in Mac format.

• Save each graphic as a separate file, with an easily identifiable filename – ideally

including the number of the relevant caption.

• Images must be provided as Tiff or EPS files.

• Ideally, black-and-white images should be 5Mb; colour images should be at least 20Mb.

• Images should have a minimum resolution of 300dpi at the intended size of use. A good

guide, therefore, is to supply images at approx A4 size so that they can be used full-page or reduced.

JPEG
300dpi
high quality

14KB/4.40MB

Very good for archival storage of photographs which will not need editing again, or only minor editing. Poor for images on the web due to large size -- convert to medium quality for the web. Marginally OK for archiving documents in a pinch, if black and white is inadequate and you don't have space for PNG images
Recommendations by situation
The table belows shows the effects of scanning a printed word into several different formats. This is particularly aimed at people who need to archive

printed or written documents, especially old ones, in digital format. The information may be useful to others as well. For a more general introduction to web image formats, especially as they apply to the web, I suggest Daniel Beardsmore's article Making good use of Web image formats.

The original word was printed in 12-point Palatino. Except for the large GIF image, all scans were done at 300dpi. The scanner was an HP Scanjet 4400c -- a low-level scanner -- using the supplied HP Precisionscan Pro software.

The images shown here are not the original scans, for two reasons. First, I wanted to display them several times normal size so that you have half a chance of seeing the artefacts. Second, I manipulated the images into formats which would not be further modified in the process of displaying them, and this dictated using PNG format for the display images.

There is no standard definition of "high, medium, low" for JPEG image quality, nor any standard measure of JPEG quality. The high, medium, low quality in the table are what the HP software offered. Some software allows you to pick the quality as a number, but that number is no more standardized than "high, medium, low".

Note that I do not discuss TIFF. TIFF is a file format, rather than an image format. It's possible to have various different image formats contained within a TIFF file. The acronym TIFF has become associated with lossless formats and especially with uncompressed formats, but that's only by convention and not by definition. Due to the variety of contained formats possible in TIFF, compatibility varies greatly. Now (April 2005) that PNG is widely recognized in current graphics software, there's little reason to consider TIFF.

I only consider open formats, not proprietary formats. For example, PSD (Photoshop) is an excellent format for preserving documents, but it's a proprietary format.

The file sizes are approximate, because the effectiveness of compression varies depending on the data. The "full page" is for a 8.5"x11.7" image, thus larger than either US letter or A4 paper.

Photographs for archival storage or later editing: PNG, second choice high quality JPEG.

Photographs to serve on the web: medium quality JPEG, second choice low quality JPEG.

Documents to OCR: GIF, 300dpi for large clean type, 600dpi for better accuracy.

Clean black and white documents as archive copy: GIF, scan at least 600dpi.

Documents to archive appearance: PNG, scan at least 300dpi.

If your hard disk is too small: Buy a large external disk and a DVD writer! External hard disks in the 150GB-250GB range, in USB or Firewire, now (2005) cost well under US$1/GB, even less for internals. You need backups; many new computers now include DVD writers, and a separate DVD writer is under $100 (internal). A full-page PNG image at 300dpi will use about 20MB of disk. But a 200GB disk can hold well over 10,000 of these!

If your software can't read PNG files: Most likely you are running old software. I sympathize with the desire to keep running old systems which are working perfectly well, but some of the newer releases have brought some real improvements. If you are serious about archiving images of documents, this is a good reason to upgrade.

Half-tone images, such as magazine and newspaper photographs: these require specialized scanning techniques which I do not cover here.

PNG
300dpi

29KB/15.2MB

Because PNG is lossless and full color, it is the largest of the files. However, it has no compression artefacts and can be edited repeatedly without loss of quality. Best for any image (other than black and white) which may need to be edited in the future. Best for archival storage. Good for all full color images, including pictures of documents when the actual appearance is important

Thanks

That should keep me busy for a while. My basic knowledge is already challenged but I'll have to climb that curve I suppose. It's a good sign that they wish to have high quality files. See what happens.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

07/29/2010 8:05 PM

I found some directions for you... hope if it's helpful...it's for Digital image Pro microsoft...for PGN+ files. If you have it.

You may want to read this PNG primer first for a brief explanation of what a PNG file is.

PNG files can be confused with PNG Plus (PNG+) in Digital Image Pro- here are a few definitions:

.png (portable newtwork graphics). The PNG format is supported by newer imaging applications and used for loosless compression. It supports transparent backgrounds.

.png+ (portable network graphics plus). Like PNG, PNG plus is used for lossless compression and display. Save pictures (or layouts) with layers in the PNG Plus format if you want to be able to edit the layers.

I will be talking about .PNG file. When images are saved in a .PNG file format, other imaging programs that support .PNG files can use the file (i.e. Photoshop, Photoshop Element and Paint Shop Pro). But this is NOT the case with PNG+ files. Only Digital Image Pro can use these files.

As an example I will show you how to make a Plopper (png file) that you can place a picture in.

Open up a background paper. This can be any type of paper or photo. Usually this will be in a JPEG file format.

I am using a background paper from my "Remember Fall" page kit.

Duplicate the image so you are working on a copy and not the original file (I would hate to save over an original file).

Edit > duplicate whole picture

Use the Marquee tool to draw out a selection that you want to delete (an area to put a picture in), click on the marquee tool as shown above.

Open up the selection tool box to select the shape you want to cut out. Click on the fly out arrow to see all the options.

Draw out the area you want to delete. The area will be a white color until you release your mouse. Then Edit > delete (or just hit the delete key)

The white area is the transparent area that will allow a picture behind the background to show.

To save your PNG file (so you can share your work with others).

File > save as > then select the portable png file from the drop down box.

Do not use the "Picture it! PNG Plus- this is the file format that maintains layers and this is not compatable with other programs.

Now you have a transparent image. Try putting a picture behind it.

Open up a picture, you will see something like this in you file stack.

Click on the PNG file you just made. Then drag your picture onto the layer.

You will see that the picture will be placed on top of our PNG file.

Just drag you picture below the PNG file and then place it and you have a nice little layered frame.

You can now save this layout as a PNG plus format to maintain the layers.

File > Save as > Picture it! PNG Plus format.

Wow. GA! What a great explanation. And you figured correctly, I need about every step explained to me. It will take time but I will let you know how I went. I never used any of these options so I'll have to try around and see what comes out the other end.

Thanks again, Ky.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

Ky, does your camera support saving its photos in the .RAW format? I'm not familiar with .PNG but .RAW is supposed to save all of the original data. Here are some links:

http://photo.net/learn/raw/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format

http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/edit_restore_photos/tips/file-formats.html

However, be aware that some .RAW formats may be proprietary and readable only by the original manufacturer's software. I've got a Nikon that fell into that category. Luckily the camera came with a CD that had the reading/converting software.

Good luck with your project!

Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, and just about any other serious software will easily support Nikon NEF.

Ky's camera is a pocket point and shoot camera and appears to only support JPEG file format. You can't do much with that.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

20 meg!?!

That is a size reserved for pro gear or even medium format.

That is way out of your league (and mine).

I don't know what your photographic goals are, but a simple point and shoot camera has its limits, not only with resolution, but the ability to capture the image effectively.

If you are simply trying to digitize your artwork and need high resolution I would look into tracking down a friend that is into photography in a big way and can help you get what you need.

You could spend many, many thousands of dollars in software and equipment to get that type of resolution only to find that the learning curve to use it is out of this world (ask me how I know). Just to give you an idea of the cost, a Nikon D3x, 24 Meg full-frame camera is going to cost you $7,400 and that is without lenses and lighting. Expect to drop a minimum of a few thousand just to get a few good lenses that will perform well enough for the camera. Budget another $500 to $1,000 for software, another $1,000 to $2,000 for accessories, and a few years of study to learn the hobby. I love photography, but it is a very challenging subject all in itself.

It would be far, far cheaper to hire a pro photographer to take your shoot for you. Just check their references and only pay for the shots you feel are acceptable.

Dittoes.

Raw format would get you closer, but still not near to your stated requirements.

Outta my league too.

Tell me about it, AH. I've been playing with cameras for more years than I like to think about and finally got ahead enough to afford a Nikon. Now I'm almost afraid to take it out in the woods when I go hiking! Heck, I'd buy a little blue blankie for it if I had any $$ left.

But, seriously, you're right, this can be a very expensive hobby. By the time you buy the lenses, bags, memory cards, and all the other little gizmos, it adds up to a serious investment in time and money.

On the plus side, it's kinda nice to be able to say "That's one of mine" when people like one of my screensaver slides, which is admittedly about as far as most of my shots make it. Maybe someday I'll get around to trying to sell some of them to recoup my investment.....Nah, I probably won't live THAT long.

Thanks AH

That is just the advice I receive from the other guy. He is a pro and he told me just what you are telling me now. As always I am trying CR4 for a short cut. You must know that I have a huge collection and hiring a photographer is way out of my financial means. So is the cost for the camera you mentioned.

Time is another issue altogether. I hardly find the time to keep up with the things I am otherwise concerned with. It took and still takes a chunk out of me just to handle this machine in a successful manner.

Good on you to hold some realistic warning signs up. Otherwise I would have hit my head against that brick wall and once I do that my stubbornness will come through and I will be completely emerged in a new venture. No time for that at this moment in time.

Thanks for your advice, Ky.

And by the time, you procure all this, same artpicture site will demand you even higher resolution.. 30MP pictures!

gsuhas

Here I go again: I have dismissed the idea all together by now.

I'll stick to what I do best and just keep coming at it. It would be like building ammo and no gun to shoot it with or a target to shoot at. It would be a waste of time.

I really just do it for pleasure and to get away, distracted from other very complex matters I am concerned with. Like putting a "Smash Hit" into an interior space.

Where is Richard Branston when you need him? Flying high?

No procuring for me, Ky.

Ky, I forgot to add that I use Paint Shop Pro for the digital stuff. It's about $100 or less when on sale and does (for me at least, but I'm not a pro) a good job. You might be able to download a trial version from the PSP website. The newer versions most likely support the newer formats, but I'm too cheap to pony up the money for an upgrade.

I can only say I was remiss on not complimenting your paintings more. My last painting is a failure.

Otherwise the tech nazis always seem to want more. You'll never ever satisfy some who have no interest in content. Now Kodak sells a Kodak Easyshare camera that puts out 10 megapixels for 99 dollars. My brother says they are great because they are easy.

(My last moneymaking project involving photos and printers required supplying the printer a 10 megapixel camera image.) Had an Olympus for three years now that only does 8.

I suspect Garthh and Del the Cat can give you a better answer than I can. Whenever I have the money I just hire someone better than me for the specific job.

Thanks Russel and again all others.

Ambition and good will only gets one as far as one pays. As far as I can see now I have hit a dead end. I will try CNC's approach but will not be holding my breath while I try and work it out. It does seem to be the camera that makes the biggest difference. "Houston I have a problem!"

It can sometimes take weeks if not months to finish a painting. I work on several at the same time so not too get bored and allow for generous drying times of the different layers. See how I go and I will report back to you guys. Got a bit of homework to do before I loose my patience.

This painting is one of the works I have now. It is realistic but I have gone more abstract nowadays. Replicating nature is an un-thankful and mostly fruitless exercise. She always beats me hands down.

It is just under 2 MB's and seems not good enough for the people in the business of selling print art. I have a lot to learn it seems and nobody can or will do it for me.

Thanks Trans, see what happens next, Ky.

Yep, just one of those days. I have painted that view so many times that when I came home from the pub (That's the view we have to endure from there) that day and started it just from memory. I quiet know my pallet and what to use to try and recreate a scene like that. Never ever good enough but one keeps trying and then again and again.

No difference to a CAD really but the reality of that medium takes over and demands perfection of another kind. Thanks to Chrisg288 and his talents, visions can be realized in a different way. All the same in the end, meaning and resulting in a tiny bit of satisfaction.

Lazy Canadian Bastard that he is.

I'll take the weekend to get closer to the hardware and other stuff I'll require to be a bit more competitive about my art. Its time out for me when I hit the turps. Very relaxing.

Thanks for the compliment, Ky.

I've got to jump in and say the Kodak Easyshare camera is GREAT! I bought each of the kids one at Christmas last year. A pink one and a purple one. I liked them so well I bought ourselves one (silver). They are just plain fun! They work great! They're cheap enough that I don't have to have a heart attach each time one of the kids drop theirs. And we're getting a lot of good family photos from them. Easy to upload. They use standard Double AA batteries which I like. We buy the rechargable but in a pinch on an outing we can buy DuraCell at the corner convenience store and keep on shooting.

To use for photographing a painting. I wouldn't recommend them.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

I searched around a bit for you and found this webpage: http://fineartamerica.com/blogs/uploading-to-faa-and-image-files-formats-jpeg-etc.html

It explains about uploading images. It also says this:

"The max upload size for FAA POD is 20 MB (Megabytes) and the minimum DPI (Dots Per Inch is 300). The image format must be JPEG. JPEG compression always damages your image somewhat (it's a "lossy" type of compression - it throws away pixels to make your image smaller). So, the trick is to compress your image enough to make it smaller than 20MB, but not so much as to damage the image too visibly."

So perhaps you were not reaching the minimum DPI? Maybe this setting can be adjusted when you save the file from your photo software?

I hope this helps.

From the web site http://fineartamerica.com/printondemand.html

"Images may be any pixel size (e.g. 1600 x 1200). If you will be participating in our print-on-demand program, you are encouraged to upload larger images in order to offer the largest range of print sizes. We currently accept images in the following formats: .jpg, .jpeg. Each uploaded image must be 20 MB or less."

I'm not sure why you are having problems, but it looks like your camera and photo editor should be able to provide good quality prints up to 8"x10". The .jpeg format appears to be the only one they accept.

I'm not sure why you are having problems

The problems start when I select the image, place it, title it, choose the canvas, paper, give a description for the viewer and try to send and place it. All is good but it does not appear on the site. No explanation, no nothing.

They seem to refuse to accept it, or some computer software does. That is the reason for my inquiry here. Like I said, I have contacted them but received no reply, so I think the fault is on my side, which it possibly is. They are possibly thinking that someone appeared from the stone age and has no clue. They are right just not with the stone age part.

I will try the above mentioned versions and hope something will work out. One problem seems to be that my paintings a quiet large, usually larger then 4x6' 1.2x1.8m and some are even larger. I'll delve into this and see what happens.

Thanks for assisting, Ky.

According to the size table, the largest canvas you could reproduce with your current camera is approximately 24"x30". HOWEVER, this would be a pale representation of your original work.

To faithfully reproduce your larger works at/near actual size, you will need a better camera and/or the assistance of a professional photography service.

I used to have problems uploading larger files (anywhere) when I still used Windows. Anything over 2 MB would choke about 50% of the time. I would have bet that it was a hardware limitation, but I was wrong! With the same hardware and high speed internet connection, the Linux based OS and software I switched to in 2008 provides easy and flawless uploads and downloads of any size I have attempted so far. Sorry I cannot verify that a software change will help with your site.

Hi mjb1962853

I have a very fast connection so I think it has some other reasons. The camera could be a problem as Anonymous Hero mentioned earlier on. At least I am getting heaps of feedback on this and I am sure (really?) something will come up. If all the others on that site have the same problem how can they have and keep up such a service?

We shall see, Ky.

A couple of questions:

Which browser are you using? I have read about members having issues with various browser but none have complained about compatibility with firefox. They recommend that you use firefox for uploading.

How long ago did you upload? Several forum entries mention that the site is sometimes agonizingly slow to show their uploads.

How many times did you try to upload? People state in the forums that uploading can sometimes take several tries.

Yep firefox it is. They tell me uploading takes time and I just keep waiting. After upload I the go to my page and nothing is there. I tried several times, but no luck or whatever one wants to call it.

I appreciate that you are trying. Thanks, Ky.

A possible test- try uploading one of your images to SkyDrive (an MS cloud service) and see if you can view it there. That will tell you if it is the site or if you have problems with your software/connection. That won't do anything about the final quality, but will give you an idea about uploading your work.

And, of course, while you are at it, put the pictures in a public file and connect to my network so I can have a look at them (I am still looking at "Hypocrite", trying to figure out how to get my hands on it- financial issues these days...)

Yeah, I thought about hitting our friend in the other thread with that painting the other day. Perls for the swines I suppose. He would have not understood what it is about, I am sure of that. Here it is for the others. Hope you like a bit of abstract.

You could always order a low quality print and blame me for it

See what happens, Ky.

Go to SkyDrive. This is a Microsoft site- the link is:

http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive

Once you set up your account, you can upload whatever you like, and there is a "public" folder where you put the stuff you want to share. The only problem is, you have to tell people to join your "network" before they can access your "public" files.

Alternative, to those who are averse to taking advantage of freebees from MS is Adrive-

http://www.adrive.com/

But here, you have to send links to people with whom you want to share your stuff. I think SkyDrive is easier for sharing.

I have used both, sort of- actually, SkyDrive worked fine for sharing project files that were too big to send via e-mail. Especially for you, Ky, since you may not want all of your work to float around uncontrolled all over the Internet, these two sites offer a bit more control over who has access than general open publishing sites like Youtube.

Chris, I think you may already be a part of my network- if so, you can have a look at the sort of stuff I "store" in the cloud. Not a good idea to put stuff there that you may want to control distribution of...

If you need more assistance, send me a PM.

The painting is not a self portrait.

So.............:

Every body has my permission to distribute, print, sell whatever, at will. If they make dosh out of it and people really want to pay money for it then the originals rise in value. I still have them all and treat them as a nest egg. Its all bonus to me. No need for permission at all. If I can make people happy with them is good enough for me.

If someone wants to make a profit and gives me a share? why not? My chances of receiving any thing, if I do it the standard way, are even less. I personally would like to donate this one to the Olympic games in London. I am breaching Copy right because the use of the rings. So what? let them sue me. They did back in 1999 when I tried publishing in Australia. I even had legal eagles in high places and they stood no chance. So why not just give it away?

You can't take money out of a naked mans trousers.

Twelve panel Oil on canvas 3.2x2.1m

Presenting these here does not breach any CR4 rules either because I'm not promoting business but art, or what I interpret as art. If you ever get bored find all the allegories and symbolism's and color coded messages.

Could I actually cloud this? Don't get me started, Ky.

I really like your work, Ky. I need to show it to my girlfriend, who is an artist.

She also was brokering local artists, so she will most likely have some useful input for you on how to get some recognition and promote your work.

While you can always sell on websites like you are trying to work with, having your own website/gallery is another option to consider as a secondary route.

The recommendation of creating and selling Giclée of the original from another poster is a good idea.

I would recommend holding your work a little closer to your vest rather than giving free distribution.

Any assistance is welcome AH. It's just that my time is very limited and only my dedication allows me to steal the time I am spending here now. I am in no rush and want to do the best I can and as we have seen that was just not good enough.

Because of the bad quality of what I show here, only the not initiated will have their field day. As it seems, the people in the know will see what good quality is about. I once sold a print to a well known American film director. It was dealt with by, through Zazzle who don't care much about quality, or so it seems.

He was very disappointed with the result and wanted to buy the original and was even more upset when I told him it was not for sale. It is a large scale diptych and he only wanted one of the twins. No way I could brake them apart, not even for him.

Once I get all the information I am receiving here into working order I will contact him and rectify the problem and supply him with a better "negative" as we used to say in the old days. That will make him a happy man and better satisfy his critical eyes which I have possibly insulted.

We shall see, Ky.

Don't want to lower your spirits any more than necessary () - but I'm harking back to the days when we made printed circuit board layouts using black sticky tape on translucent paper or plastic sheet.

The artwork (usually produced at 4x or 8x finished size) was taken for photography to a guy with a vertical process camera (best example I could find) for production of reduced transparencies which were then used for making the PCB's (using photo-resist & chemical etching).

Having rambled through all that, I can see that it would have to be an immense camera to capture originals of the sizes you're producing.

I think they may've used such things at Disney Studios way back - but I don't know if there was a step between getting digital representations of the artwork and going straight to computer graphics.

Sorry, not much help here. I'm OuT.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

Hi Ky,

this thread came in the dailies today.. otherwise I woulda missed it. I wasn't ignoring you.

I think that when a piece of fine art is scanned, say a 24" x 18", at a resolution of 300 dpi, you will get a file that is 20mb in size. Normally, when speaking of the resolution of a file, you are not speaking of size. That is not the correct measurement of dimensional size. You have to understand the various parameters or goals of the digital file.

If the file is to be downloaded, and printed on a large format printer, then it is understandable that they (you) would want to sell a high resolution file. The parameters for this would be a print size of 24 x 18, with a resolution fo 300 dots per inch, and probably a bit depth of 24. (number of colors possible for any given pixel/dot)

for each pixel
store a color of 16,777,216 possibles. (24 bit)
store 300 pixels/dots per inch (hor & vert)
image size hor = 24" x 300 dpi = 7200 pixels/dots wide
image size vert = 18" x 300 dpi = 5400 pixels/dots high
next
next
next

total pixels/dots = 38,880,000
multiply by bit depth = 652,298,158,080,000 bits.
convert to megabytes = 77,760,000 (~78 mb)

so you can see that this size of file would be quite large. If it was this size, you might want to consider lowering the bit depth (colors), or lowering the dpi (resolution). Be aware that both are a lowering of the quality of the digital image. its a trade-off. but a common one when dealing with digital art. everybody faces this. As a seller and an artist, you want to ensure that your pictures are looking as good as possible when you sell them for print.

If you wish to simply post your art for people to view (full screen?) then you don't need anything like this kind of resolution. a resolution of 150 dpi and 24 bit color is lots to get great viewing. Also be aware that jpg is an algorithm, and that every time you save a jpg (say in mspaint) that the file size gets smaller and smaller. If you wish to maintain your quality, you want to save in bmp, tiff, or other format. (I'm not sure about png.. I don't think that is what you need.. but I'm not an expert at this)

so I think you need to clarify your intentions.

cheers my friend.

Chris

Hi Chris

Your post perfectly proves what I stated about you in post 24. I will not repeat it here

As you know I am concerned with other matters and having to spend a lot of time and money on distributing my work digitally and at high quality is something out of my realm. I will have to delegate this one day unless I find some spare time, which doesn't seem likely. It would take less time, effort, materials, inspiration and willpower to just start and finish a new painting. Know what I mean?

I think there is now enough information for me to digest. Thanks to you, I have even further details into something I thought could just "be done" as fast as I threw in the towel.

Is CR4 a great institution or what?

Thanks to all of you, Ky.

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

07/31/2010 7:57 AM

Hi Chris,

Don't want to get contentious, but I think you may've made a slip or two in your sums.

---------------

for each pixel
store a color of 16,777,216 possibles. (24 bit)
store 300 pixels/dots per inch (hor & vert)
image size hor = 24" x 300 dpi = 7200 pixels/dots wide
image size vert = 18" x 300 dpi = 5400 pixels/dots high
next
next
next

total pixels/dots = 38,880,000 multiply by bit depth = 652,298,158,080,000 bits.

convert to megabytes = 77,760,000 (~78 mb)

---------------

I'm with you up to the total number of pixels:

18 x 24 x 300 x 300 = 38,880,000

Now, each pixel is stored in 24 bits. 24 bits/pixel at 8 bits/byte = 3 bytes/pixel, so the total byte count is 38,880,000 x 3 = 116,640,000.

116,640,000 / 1024 = 113,906.25 kilobytes

113,906.25 / 1024 = 111.237 megabytes (to 3 d.p.).

I think you took the pixel count and multiplied by 224 to get that colossal bit count. Putting that result into the bit calculator you linked to comes up with 77,760,000 megabytes ≈ 74 terabytes!

---------------

I copied Ky's image (Hypocrite, from #29) into Paint Shop Pro, and re-sized it to 5400 x 7200 pixels, at 24 bits/pixel. I then saved in various formats:

.bmp: 113,907 KB on disk.

.jpg: 2,108 KB on disk.

.png: 21,759 KB on disk.

.gif: 24,329 KB on disk.

This last is a bit of puzzler, as Paint Shop insisted on changing it to 256 colours, which should mean 8 bits/pixel. This would give a file size of 37,969 KB, so it must've done some compression. I would've expected it to be smaller.

Sorry about the ramble, but it is Saturday .

All the best,
John

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

07/31/2010 6:50 AM

First I am going to answer your questions.

Yes. You need a better camera.

And Yes. You need better editing software.

That being said I think it should also be noted that you are probably trying to do one of the most difficult assignments in photography. Take a picture of a picture. You really need to be doing that in a proper studio. I am a graphic artist and you would be blown away by the kind of work that comes out of the studios we use in our town. It is incredibly amazing! And their quality completely blows away any amateur digital camera by MILES!!! I don't care if you have a 12 or 16 MEG digital camera a professional studio is still going to shoot a much better image because they have larger lenses and proper lighting and much larger camera backs. Of course they don't shoot things for free. When printing on an offset press we routinely expect files sizes of anywhere from 40 to 80 MEG for a 9" x 12" image. For a website I'm not sure why they would want such LARGE files but than I guess they're only asking for 20 MEG or at least that is what your friend told you.

If you were going to be serious about doing your own photography than I would recommend you check out the NIKON D-90 or maybe D-60. NIKON is the brand I am familiar with but I believe CANON also makes a perfectly good counterpart. Just not sure what it is called. The D-90 is like the old 35mm camera's your dad used to have where you can change out the lenses. You can buy Wide Angle Lenses and Telephoto Lenses etc. You can set up remote flash units that are slaved to the camera. The whole nine yards.

As far as RAW format goes I just wanted to clear the air as to what it is. Most serious photographers and studios do want their camera's to be able to record in RAW. Because that is the RAW data that the camera back captured at the moment of the shot. A RAW file however is not something that you can just look at with any software. It's kind of like having a negative. The negative has all the information that the camera captured on film but when you look at a negative the picture looks awful. At least all the ones I ever looked at did. But when you make the print from the negative the print looks great. But there is more. A skilled darkroom person can make the print look even better than what you would get from your standard walmart store. Or lets say it is a picture of a sunset. A skilled darkroom person might produce a print from the negative and the sunset looks yellowish and bright. Lets say he took the picture and remembered the sunset being more golden with deep oranges and reds. He can go back to the dark room and using appropriate filters produce a print that looks much closer to what he remembered when he took the shot. He can do this all from the same negative. A RAW file is like that. Give a RAW file to an average person and they won't even be able to view it. That is why the camera makers programmed in standard subroutines that convert the RAW image to a "standard walmart print" if you will and save them as JPEGs on the memory card since most people CAN view a JPEG. And JPEGs are one of the standards that were set by the "Joint Photographers Experts Group" that everyone is familiar with and can usually manipulate. However, the TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) format IS better since JPEGs can suffer from compression issues. Which is a whole other subject that I am not going to get into right now. But your club or website will care. Give a RAW file to an "expert" like the guy in the darkroom we talked about earlier and he can manipulate that file with the proper software of course to get MUCH BETTER PRINTS from it than the standard walmart subroutine. He can also manipulate the file to make the print look like the scene as he remembered it or even more dramatic than he remembered it. But as a Graphic Artist who is placing final images into a layout. I don't want your RAW file. I want a "Finished File" that looks the way you want it to look. Your website club is NOT going to want your RAW file either. Because they will have no way of knowing what parameters to invoke on it to make the file look the way you want it to look. Oh sure they could invoke the standard walmart print parameters on it but than that may not look anything like what you shot. They are going to want a "Finished File" in whatever format they request.

Last but not least. If you want to see what a difference a studio can make you should check out creativeleaf.com Talk to Derek and tell him Randy the layout guy sent you. Or find one locally and get them to shoot a test painting for you. If they are reputable you will gulp when you see the quality of the file. Have you ever considered selling Giclée's of your paintings?

Good Luck!

Randy

Hi Randy

I sure have opened a can of worms here. It seems I was influenced by the hype the sellers of digital cameras put forward. I am that dad using old fashioned cameras and I have worked in professional studios but that was a long time ago. (Reinhard Wolf and his New York series). It's a different world now and simplicity, although handy, does not bring the desired results as I am finding out now.

I will have to put the advice I am receiving into the "too hard basket" for the moment. All the disciplines involved in just taking a perfect shot of a painting is more complicated than painting it in the first place (like I already said). Maybe just as hard and difficult as painting from a photo and adding character or whatever one likes to call it.

It took me a few days to take the shots of my collection. They were done in full sun with a fixed easel and fixed camera position so all I had to do was take two or three shots of every painting and then run and get the next. At mid day here that can be a grueling task and only the hours between 11am and 1pm were color neutral, or so I hoped.

If I were to take all of my paintings, put them in removal truck and turn up at a professional studio they would have their work cut out for them. The next cut would be made into my bank account and to balance that account is taking up most of my other working life.

"If it would be easy every one would be doing it" comes to mind. I have given you a Good Answer because my eyes are more opened than ever and I can see my naivety in all colors of the rainbow. I will have to bide my time and get serious about it when and if I can afford it.

I did consider using up to date ink jet printing regarding my textile printing approach. They are just now getting a quality that is excepted by the fashion Gurus. Again the scale of investment beats the purpose. It really looks like a full time job and if I can read between the lines even the pros are on that famous learning curve.

Thank you for the information. I am firmly on the ground now and my questions have been more than answered. Quality is the result of excellence and I am far from it with my tools.

We shall see, Ky.

Why not contact a local high school or even a college and see if they have an instructor for a photography course.

As if the instructor would be willing to have you paintings photographed as part of a student project.

While the results probably will not be as hiring a pro, chances are it will be more than adequate for your needs.

You get all your work photographed for free and the students get to learn how to manage a different type of work.

The Island arts community is planning an Island exhibition in September. I will take part in that exercise and have even found the space to do it. It will be partly out doors so we are hoping for one of our usually sunny days.

This will attract the people you have mentioned and I will get in touch with them. The teachers will like a challenge, I think. I'll put some shots of the exhibition here so that you guys get an idea of the scope of things I am talking about. Just hanging them could take a few days.

We shall see, Ky.

Possibly I ought to collect all my manuscripts that only exist on paper and give them to the typing classes? What difference is there?

"Everybody likes to look at pictures."

These days as far as originals, one off prints from cameras, I sell my pictures for whatever I can get.

That's it. I'll be dead soon enough.

Out the house! Out the house! Get this out the house!

I'm sick to death of my books that haven't yet sold. There are few copies. I really can't find one manuscript.

Who in their right mind would expect a typist to work for free? Look at it that way and you understand why if I've got some money I pay others to conform my work.

- or just sell it for whatever cash someone pulls out and pays right then and there.

20 bucks makes a big difference to me these days.

I did look at a 99 dollar Kodak Easyshare camera capable of 10 megapixels. Will it work for what Ky needs done?

Russel I can feel for you. Over the years I have sold many paintings under price. Never my abstracts though. Only the bread and butter ones. The one bellow was bought while I was still painting on it and due to the dire financial straights I was in, I agreed to the first offer. How I regret that now. Here it is. It shows Blue's house on low tide. I might do another one some day.

This is only a scan of a photo which the buyer sent me. I didn't even have a digi back then and no money for a film for my Pentax. Yep, life can be tough, just hang in there Mate, all will be good if you want it to be, Ky.

You could always try using a different Program like Adobe Photoshop Elements (which isn't very expensive) and then increase the pixel resolution using the Image Size Function (bicubic and sharpening). I am sure you know that you should always use the Bitmap, JPEG-2 or TIFF file image (or something similar) when working on your photos. I didn't know that fact when I was working on a JPG file a few years ago and the nice solid red coat my daughter was wearing suddenly became checkered.

Have fun with your photos, I am currently having a problem in trying to figure out if there is a program available that will allow me to use some sort of oblique lighting on an otherwise very flat object which is about 2 microns in size. I am trying to bring out more detail and an increased resolution of 1,000 to 1,200 isn't quite doing the job.

I am not well enough versed in this technology to answer your question directly. I can tell you that I have learned some practical lessons. I take technical photos (usually macro or micro) and a few sports photos that I have turned into greatly magnified "Fatheads". I have had my best results with a Nikon D700 (12.1Mp) used in RAW or TIFF.It seems that whenever I use any of my post-processing software to edit a photo, it goes through some type of compression, becomes a significantly smaller file, and loses resolution. As a result, I shoot all photos in high resolution modes and send them as unedited files to the publishers. The only problems I have had recently is that some email services won't accept these larger files.

Hi, Ky,

You could do worse than Googling "photographing artwork", and browsing through the results. There seems to be some useful information there.

Ky, not to throw more dust in the air, but when you work with digital images, please make sure your software and computer monitor are set up in conjunction with each other. Monitors and programs sometimes need to have their display settings (gamma, CMYK, etc.) tweaked so that what you see on the screen when working on the image is reproduced faithfully when it's printed. Otherwise slight but noticeable color shifts can occur. Found this out the hard way!

That is a good point!

There are hardware/software products you can buy to calibrate those settings. Just more $$$ to add to the list.

I have noticed that and have ordered a new flat screen monitor. What I see on this old one will not reflect what anyone else sees. If AH likes the colors in post 15, as stated, they may not be the ones I am seeing. Even looking at the original could be a matter of perception.

We shall see, Ky.

You could give

Gimp [Mac version] a try, which does a decent job of controlling the image file size you save

A more general download

the community will I'm sure be most helpful

I use the google version of the cloud Picasa webalbums, which has a Gig of storage

access can be set from totally public on down to completely private

Note for CW, I use the picasa photo manager, which runs in wine, but still finds pictures I didn't even know I still had, the watched folders can be set...

I use GIMP as well- but I am not as interested in the quality that ky is after, so i am not qualified to rate GIMP vs Photoshop or other photo editing software. GIMP may not be as user-friendly as some of the other options. Picasa seems to be a better solution for cloud posting than my suggestions.

Great thread (and cool artwork).
The real question is what do you want from your art?
From my perspective, I'd find a more userfriendly site for your stuff.
Art isn't about the number of pixels.
If you just want it out there and appreciated, then your gear is fine, if you want to get the works printed off digitally or to sell it on line then presumably you need better resolution.
If you want your stuff out there to be seen but not to be coppied/borrowed/stolen so that people will want the real original work, then lower res is actually better.
Bottom line, you pay your money you takes your choice.
With my bow making, I just sell enough bows to cover my costs and allow me to buy some fancy new tools and to pay for my archery expenses. I wouldn't want to get sucked into loads of expense which I wouldn't get back.
Del
(BTW. Sorry if I've covered stuff alread answered, I only skimmed the thread...I'm a cat I don't actually read the posts I jus look at the pictures...specially the little girl with the kitty)

Great thread (and cool artwork).

This one I find cool. It is called "Ky Bay" and I just made it up from memory or better fantasy. That is what I would want my bay to look like. On an incoming tide so that dinner can be on the table a couple of hours later.

BTW I have never painted a cat, ever but we love them and the way they used to make us do things. Not a good idea to have cats on the Island, to much potential pray. Like these little critters.

Cute or what?

Re: Do I Need a New Better Camera or a Different Photo Shop Manager?

Actually the more I think about it, the more I think the site you want to download to is bonkers.
The average monitor isn't going to register the difference in quality, assuming people are going to view online.
My camera is 10MP and the photos I post on my website are good enough to zoom in and see detail. Most art is viewed as a whole, if you are zooming in you are missing the point.
Go with your heart, don't be bullied by some self appointed arbiters of quality.

I've now caught up with the rest of the posts... tea and toast for everyone!

Can we clarify? Are you hoping to sell digital prints online via the site you mentioned in the OP? (Sorry if I'm being thick... errr...Kris made me ask) The idea of selling prints may be of interest to me.

Hi Del

Curiosity is or can be very dangerous for cats.

You make some valid points and if it would not be for some PM's and reactions to my work I would not have tried to please as much as I did. I just weaved them into posts in the past, if they seemed appropriate. Better quality seemed to be the way to go but now, after all this information, I will pass on that for the time being.

Seeing the effort I have to put in to publish high quality prints of my work seems way over the top. I think I'll just keep them and wait until the space to store them runs out. They don't eat much and I can rehang my house all the time and never get bored. Most just stand like books next to each other but I can remember each one just by looking at the sides.

Another thing is that I am quiet busy with other matters and before I start a new project I would like a clean slate and a few bucks in my pocket. Here is one that I never take off the wall. It is the way I deal with stress, sometimes; "Off The Hook"

Yep, the mango season will be upon us soon. Time to nourish on models and then rub my skin with the empty skin of the fruit and lay in the sun and smell like a fruit cake, which I possibly am.

Thanks for assisting my decision not to venture any further with this. Doing half baked things is not one of my strengths. It would be a bit like you carving bows from Balsa because it is so easy to sand, if you know what I mean.

Cheers, Ky.

I have a 4-megapixal camera, but it is a pro camera and with the right post processing I can get poster sized prints through a process called up sampling.

My point is, that there isn't a need for a 24 meg sensor. However, a good lens (or even a great lens), proper lighting, technique, and the right software can produce results that meet and exceed the needs. A clever person could do that with $500 to $1500 of investment.

The show stopper is the knowledge to do all of that. It takes years of work to learn the trade (just like any other technical trade) and unless someone is wiling to put in the time and effort, all the equipment in the world will do nothing for you.

I actually like lo res, Mrs Cat took this pic with her phone, I'd just seen a woman at the bus stop in a pink top and blue jeans, it made me think of Mondrian. I messed about on the PC and created "Mrs Mondrian at the Bus Stop"

Good stuff AH

A clever person also knows when to stop digging. The hole I found myself in was getting deeper and deeper. Thanks to some very educating tips, hints and plain good advice I have chosen to give this a miss and continue once I have more time. Because You seem to like colors, here is one I had prepared before. Your pragmatic approach has cured me, for now, and I will widen my hole before I go for any more depth.

Thanks to all for helping, Ky.

Clown fish are among my favorites. One of the best appears on the Australian 50 cent coin from the reef series. An actual full color clown fish on the reverse of a coin. If I find the time, I may photograph it with my 12 Mp camera.

Mantle holds up the heavy painting on steel. I need a new brain, maybe. Is Kodak dead? Should I Buy a Kodak Easyshare, or what? Do Digital Prints from CVS last? Why don't we sue Sharpie company, since their permanent ink, isn't permanent at all? Does Kinkos make long lasting prints? Why are potatoes the key to color photography? Is Grumbacher ZEC a great aid to the impatient painter? Why did Nikon in Armock have such a stupid ugly building, and what where they thinking when they installed a loading dock on a downhill grade of 15 degrees where it snows so much? Don't photo prints on canvas make you retch? Is the conceputual artist an artist? Is architecture the first art, or was it jewelery? Can truth be ugly? Is all art dependent on excess, and are all artists thieves? Why did Da Vinci paint?

Hi,

I have tried to read all the answers thoroughly, but apologies if someone has already mentioned this -

It would be a bit tricky, but could you take a number of pictures of smaller areas of the picture then use a photo-program to stich them together. This would then give you a much higher resolution than one photo.

You may have to dedicate a bit of floor space and maybe set up a rig, such as a large piece of card supported off the floor with holes cut out for your camera at regular intervals, then put your artwork on the floor underneath. This would ensure all the photos are taken from the same distance and that each picture overlaps sufficently for merging them. It may take a bit of experimentation but once you've got it set up you could use it to photograph any picture.

Your main problems would be consistant lighting and if there is any distortion from the camera lens.

Welcome to CR4 Sulphurette

Good thinking. I had to actually do that with the Olympics (Ozlymix) painting. As you anticipated it was very tricky and I had to move really fast. At least the panels were designed in such a way so to be able to assemble them. Imagine I would have to it with this one.

I would love it see it as a fabric pattern one day. Printed on silk or some other flowing substrate. In my dreams, Ky.

Well, Kandinsky and Feininger are my heroes. There is more maths in them than one would expect. Here is one from the green series. I call them my Flappinsky period.

Wanna know why?

Well, I had an exhibition one day (before my Gallery got wiped out by Cyclone Tessie in 2000). It had the theme "Butterflies". As I hate the choice of name for these beautiful critters (How can butter fly?) I titled the exhibition the "Flapperlingerrers" because the flap around and sometimes linger.

Because neither Kandinsky nor Feininger were concerned much with organic stuff I called the series "The Flappinsky Series". You work it out. Here is one that sold on the day and payed for drinks and nibbles. At the end of the night there were some people who thought they could fly and they had to find out the hard way, that it takes more than moving hands very quickly up and down to do so.

This is an example of what a bad reproduction can do, Ky.

If that's a bad reproduction - the original must be ....

(Jeez - I'm starting to sound like an arselicker here - certainly not where I'm coming from. It's bloody loverly).

Must take "Flapperlingerrer" out and try it for size. Interesting word. (Tho' I pussnully don't have any objection to "butterfly").

Thanks for the explanation.

You know, I could go on for days if not weeks and possibly will. It's a shame I started taking photographs of my work only recently other wise I could go on for years.

Here is an interpretation of a painting by Ray Crook. He is a senior Australian artist and I just love his style. It is a copy and I thought a pregnant women walking through the scene would be nice. Hope I'm not breaching Copy right here.

Here Ya go 34point5

"Cock Fight"

It would easily fit across two doors so a little image like this does not do it justice. Who in their right mind would hang a piece of aggro like this on their wall? I didn't care at the time but just did it, as I always do. I still don't care really, Ky.

While I'm at it, here is my favorite.

"Dog In Turmoil"

It's Freebee and anyone who knew him can recognize him in this painting. He is no more but he did get very old. The grand kids miss him most and when Heidi told them that he was now in "dog heaven" they looked at her and made it clear to her that there was no such thing. And that from kids 5 and 9 years old.

More soon, gotta go, Ky.

Not even you could get me to paint something as unrealistic as that. Well, maybe, it's a free world so one never knows. Here is one for our European friends.

"Lazy Europe"

Painting a "Dog In Heaven" or a cat (but not in heaven), just to keep Del happy.

"Pregnant Dali"

Note: they are large!

Thanks Garthh

It would be great if I could add to it myself or take out the multiples. Do you mind just keeping it up, what otherwise would take me ages to perform? Here is one for you.
