Why to Moniter Speed of New Vehicle to 40 -50 Km for 1000 Km or So till 6 Months

10/01/2010 1:52 AM

We got a new two wheeler, I was lost when the service man told me not to go too hard maintain 40- 50 km as it is new engine for 1000Km.

I wanted to figure the answer out.

This is my version...

Bore expand more loss of vapors and heat to surrounding- Basing whole of my discussion on this

A new engine is not seasoned i.e. a product directly after the test to confirm it is good and running condition. So the whole engine especially the bore have free expansion with differing heat.

when a vehicle is given this degree of freedom depending how fast I drive heat generation increases and bore size too.

So lets think like this with no control on my speed then bore may get expanded upto 5-6mm.

If the same I had controlled my speed till my first service, then for 40-50 Km the bore could have max expanded 2-3mm till the service. Bu this time the new engines elastic limit would have mooved into plastic region and a new setpoint created. Thus this would prevent additional stress from moving setpoint to new limit i.e. residual stress blocks the further build of stress. So after first service I drive fast the bore expansion remains 2-3mm rather 5-6mm.

Helping me to keep my mileage by keeping the bore expansion less.

You could always get one of the motoGP guys to (run it in) for you, this is a practise from ancient history when mechanical stuff broke because of unknown manufacturing flaws.. Not aplicable in this day and age....

Because materials science and manufacturing techniques (this case, machining) were so crude that break-in, or as Peter described them, running in periods were prescribed to prevent premature failures such as burned bearings, scorched running surfaces and overheated mating surfaces. Surface finishes (actual finish and dimensions) often varied wildly. So, "light duty" service during the first part of a mechanism's life was dictated by the manufacturer, so parts would "get happy" with one another.

Manufacturing and machining have improved so much this is really a thing of the past.

Of course, break-in or running in periods may be a good idea for human relationships, to prevent premature "failure".

And what does the owner's manual say about this?

Yep, I bought a brand-new 1987 VW Jetta, drove it home from the dealer, put a bumper hitch on it, hooked up a motorcycle trailer with my 500 Interceptor, loaded the boot (trunk) and back seat full of clothes and other miscellaneous stuff for an extended business trip (TDY) with my soon-to-be wife, and we drove from Novato, California to Vint Hill Farms Station, Virginia. So much for the gentle driving, varying speeds, etc. Climbing into the Sierra Nevada mountains of California was a third or fourth gear full throttle affair. Flat out running on interstates, up through Yellowstone and the Rockies and even a full-throttle extended second gear run up into Rocky Mountain National Park over Trail Ridge Road at 12,000 feet elevation.

I stll have that car. My 18 yr old son drives it now with over 250,000 miles. If it's a quality made engine, I wouldn't worry about it.
