Insect repellent

12/24/2010 9:56 AM

Hi guys here is a circuit for insect repellent.

i got it from digit magazine,i thought of using it as mosquito repellent but i didn't make any decrease in rating of mosquito biting.

It is said that ON state of LED shows the circuit is working.Do anyone have an idea to keep away these mosquitoes.....

does ultrasonic sound does something to keep them away?

I was kidding. That would be a little extreme!

Insect repellants that contain DEET help. Mosquito netting?

Mosquitos don't travel far......if possible try to eliminate any standing water within a couple of hundred yards around your home.

Electronic repellants don't work. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070417194230.htm

If you come up with a way to keep those little buggers away from you, that works, you will be a very rich person.

Mosquito is attracted to the CO2 released as you exhale, design a circuit more attractive than you

bwire - You're right. The answer is to create a source of CO2 that is more attractive to mosquitos than the CO2 that you naturally breathe out. Or reduce the CO2 that lingers around you when you exhale by some means of ventilation or air flow.

As to CO2 sources there are several approaches. One, a do it yourself project involves fermentation of sugar in a container that will emit the CO2 resulting from the process. Some also suggest that a sticky sugar residue in the container will actuall entrap mosquitos attractedto it. Here's a couple of links from a Google search on "home built CO2 mosquito" ---

http://hubpages.com/hub/Home_made_Mosquito_Trap

http://www.helium.com/items/1237914-how-to-build-a-homemade-mosquito-trap-repeling-mosquitoes#There are commercially made

There are commercially made propane powered CO2 generators that produce CO2 from the combustion of propane as well as smaller devices that simply emit a low flow of CO2 from a compressed gas cylinder. Easy to find on an internet search. Expect to pay $150 - $400.

A clever mechanic could build his own with a bit of experimentation to find the most economical "burn" rate and means for distributing the CO2 emission where it would do the most good in attracting mosquitoes away from the humans (and dogs with their susceptibility to heartworm infections). Note that CO2 hardware is commonly used by paintball gamers, TIG welders, soda fountain hobbyists and some circle track and drag racers. These are potential sources of used hardware.

Why not just record the sound and play it in a loop? Why build something? Am I missing something?

All this and they still find you if they want to?

More questions than answers, sorry.

LED is not bright enough to be seen by mosquitoes to run away!! - as joke !!

Lot of people have tried this kind of rodent (including rats, mouse etc) repellents which emit ultrasonic waves - operating beyond 20 KHz (human limit of sensing sound). I really doubt whether it works. Catch a few mosquitoes in a transparent container, hold your gadget, see if they get scared and try to run away- this is basically fundamental research. Then you will have to see direction of sound, intensity of sound etc etc. People have tried modulating the ultrasonic sound (like a burst from machine gun) etc etc

Here's how eating Pizza at least allows you to get some revenge on the little Critters!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VICaWgD-76w

Jokes aside, what I have found to be VERY effective is the use of Lavender Oil, a tiny drop rubbed in on any areas of exposed skin keeps Mosquitoes away, at least in Europe and the several areas I have visited in the USA.

Even a tiny bottle will give many applications......it does not need to be used like sun tan oil!!! Tiny amounts only.....

I have not tried it in any other areas of the world. I would be most interested in anyone in other areas trying it out and reporting back here.....

They do not work! People who say they do work are probably to embarrassed to admit they bought a pile of junk. One possibility would to match the frequency to the wing vibrations of the mosquito with high powered speakers maybe it would confuse its flight plan. Trouble is it would drive everybody crazy as the sound would be audible. In any case mosquito's come in different sizes it would be hard to get it right for all of them. Oil of Lavender sounds much more promising.

Keep the air moving. A simple overhead fan can help confuse the little buggers. How often do you get bitten, weather permitting - in a good breeze?
