ISO UV Gel Documentation for System for Small Biology Dept.

07/12/2011 1:19 PM

I was asked to find a small gel documentation system for our biology program. It will mostly be used by undergraduates, occasionally faculty, to document Ethidium Stained Gels. Price is the main issue, but other factors like overall sturdiness can be considered as well because we will be having students using it. The current option my colleague is looking at will cost about $4,000 so I'm hoping to find a less expensive option. It's been many years since I have done this type of work so I'm a bit in the dark about what we should be considering.

All advice is appreciated. Many thanks.

Doug

I do not recall the exact wavelength of light for maximum absorption in the UV spectrum of EDB. I am sure you can look it up and then contact suppliers of UV light sources for suggestions. I am sure you could get a better price going this way then buying from a lab supply. The one I used briefly was from a lab supply and was pretty strong. Another student got a rather bad sunburn from it.

Sorry, just read your post a little closer, if you want ISO quality and certification, I expect you had better get it from the lab supply.
