USB Portable Charger

04/18/2007 10:23 AM

I spotted this slick device today. It's a portable batter/charger in the form factor of a flash drive. The Ecosol Powerstick plugs into your USB port and charges up in about 90 minutes. Once charged you can use it to power or recharge your IPOD, MP3 player, phone, PDA or whatever small device that has run out of juice. The Powerstick (not to be confused with the rechargeable vacuum cleaner by Dirt Devil) recently won a CES 2007 Innovation Award.

You can purchase USB powered devices to keep your coffee hot, run a fan, or small vacuum cleaner, even to cool a beverage.

A USB port is designed to supply a maximum current of 0.5A at 5V (2.5W). While many of these devices can exceed the design limit of the USB port I have yet to see one that comes with a warranty that will repair your computer if its power supply is converted into a random smoke generator during use.

I prefer to charge batteries and power appliances in old fashioned ways. From 12V batteries or 110VAC

Ace "Whats-his-name" is right. I have a Zen (Dell for IPod) that charges off the USB port. In a way it's kind of annoying. I have to dedicate a USB port to charging this device... There's never enough USB ports.

Go get yourself a good USB Hun and then you will have enough ports. I believe you can get up to 7 on a hub

Good plan. If you want to use high power USB devices get a powered hub for that purpose. My personal recommendation is to NOT connect it to your computer for this application.

When was the last time you or I made a typo? This comes under the heading of not flipping someone off on the road...

When something bone-headed happens, I ask myself "When was the last time I did something like that?" This usually humbles me really fast!

I just thought it was funny, perhaps you were thinking about someone in particular..... Hun being short for Honey no doubt!

Wouldn't life be boring without such things!

Have a great day 'Hun'....

Yeah. The first time I saw it, I had to read it a couple of times before I figured out that they weren't being cheeky.

....and laptops are rarely cheap to repair. Plus, what will you do while the Laptop is getting its new power supply???? Twiddle your thumbs?

The only USB device (not counting memory sticks or printers or disks which I feel is a 'normal' USB device) I might buy would be a LED light for long flights, so as to keep the overhead lighting off for the others to watch the film or sleep!
