Removal of TiO2 from PET streams:

04/23/2007 5:34 PM

Hi,

Does anyone know of any manufactures out there who make equipment to sort "bottles" of TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) and PET (Polyethylene Terphthalate) into two different streams?

Thanks,

TiO2 Bottles!? TiO2 is normally a white power used mostly as a pigment. Can they make bottles out of it?

The answer to your question is yes they can make bottles out of it but it's very problematic when it's in a stream of clear PET.

To avoid a milky-way effect, TiO2 needs to be removed when making clear bottles.

Are you referring to a mix of clear PET bottles with other PET bottles that have been colored white by adding TiO2? If so, the answer to the OP's question is simple: put a photo-emitter on one side and a photo-detector on the other side of the bottle stream. The white bottles will scatter the light so less gets through. Another option would be a carefully placed sensor on the same side of the bottles as the emitter to detect the scattered light - the clear bottles will let the light pass on through or be reflected in another direction, while the white ones will scatter light to the detector.
