Bi-Directional Bual Engine Cars

12/30/2011 8:41 PM

I was storying with a couple of friends who raised the question; Will there be designed & manufactured a bi-directional dual engine car (which can be driven from both ends)?

So that one could do away with reversing, that when packed one could drive out from the other end of the vehicle.

Interestingly, I checked the net and found that this was done in 1974 by a Capt. Janutz of the Oregon State Police, http://www.curbsideclassic.com/curbside-classics-american/curbside-classic-bi-directional-dual-440-powered-1973-dodge-coronet-police-pursuit/ .

Has the automotive industry looked into manufacturing bi-directional dual engine cars?

This would be very impractical and expensive to produce.

If a person is that bad at backing up they shouldn't be on the road in the first place.

Yes I agree with you. But sometimes people invent machines/things over crazy ideas/reasons/purposes, some do it for fun.

Of course you realize this is an April fools joke? In the US it's traditional to play jokes on people on April 1st....this is a tall tale told to delight a group of classic car enthusiasts...

In the '60's a development of the Mini Moke was made to enable driving the vehicle from either end. It was perceived as a fire vehicle to gain access to restricted spaces and to enable the vehicle to be driven out from whence it came.

Didn't someone do that on railroad tracks with a locomotive?

Can't do a simple three point turn with a locomotive. Or a U-Turn.

There are places where you simply can't make uturns of any type.

Underground works would be a place where this sort of control flexibility would be beneficial.

I tried to find some pictures of mining/tunneling shuttle cars on the internet. It went dumb on me....

Any folk out there ever traveled on or controlled one of these?

Are there any battle tanks that have a cockpit that can slew with (or even independently of) the gun turret? That would work in tight places.
