Bicycling Versus Jogging

04/20/2012 8:19 PM

Does anyone have a comparison of calorie usage between bicycling and jogging? For me it is bicycling because that doesn't hurt my back, but I often wonder which uses the most calories? Probably the units would be calories per hour. Thanks.

It's not the form of cardio exercise that counts, it's the intensity and length of time...

Not an answer, but I'm not sure if it matters. About every jogger I know, suffers knee problems at some point in life. I'd stay away from it.

Yep every person I have ever known that exercised in general ended up dead.

Don't bother.

Of course! But all the people who didn't exercise also ended up dead.

A body at rest tends to stay at rest while a body in motion tends to annoy people everywhere.

I have nearly ran over joggers and cyclists who were not paying attention a number of times but I have yet to have a couch with a sleeping guy on it jump out in front of me while driving!

I would rather die peacefully in my sleep on the couch rather than of a heart attack while cycling or jogging wishing in my last breaths that I had not went out for exercise!

Interesting viewpoint! But I do try to double up--take my camera and find some wildflowers to photograph. I'm waiting for Osage orange and sweet gum blossoms to pop out.

I remember reading somewhere that the most cardiovascular intense exercise with the least amount of anticipated bodily injury is swimming. Many people though cannot get to a body of water large enough to actually swim.

As for the calorie consumption, it all depends on how you judge things and how hard you work at it. By the mile, biking will obviously consume less calories than jogging. By the minute I expect that it all depends on the effort of the exercise. One warning, the wind is a much bigger factor on a bike than jogging. Bike into the wind on your way out and push yourself hard going into that wind. The ride back will be a great cool down but will not strand you somewhere in exhaustion.

I couldn't find numbers for John Dough so i checked out the upper levels. I knew that the Tour de France guys can burn 1000 calories an hour but they do it for five to seven hours a day, day in day out. A marathon runner weighing about 130 lbs, about the same as some of the cyclists, burns 2250 calories.

It looks as though they are even up for the rate, but i can't imagine the marathoner running at that rate for twice as long.

Your back, and the horrible things it does to your KNEES.

With back and knees destroyed, the real problem then is exercise and weight control being sedentary.

that from an MD, not personal opinion.

I totally agree!

I've had a back operation and have problems with my knees and for me biking is:

1. More interesting and social than jogging - you see more and you can ride side by side and talk.

2. It's something you can do with the family take a picnic et cetera

3. In a way it's more practical, you can actually use it to transport yourself to the office, to the shops whatever

Biking is really a wonderful thing.
