I recently performed an emergency generator test run (Engine Model KTA50-G3 Cummins engine) which comes with the 4 units of "FIAMM L6-11" 813, CCA 950, 110 AH starting battery. During the process of starting up, I received an electrical starting system fail alarm and the generator was taken over by the air starting system and successfully start up.
I immediately shut down the emergency generator. Checked & found the 2 units of "FIAMM L6-11 "battery was ruptured, another 2 battery is intact. All the terminal & connection of the ruptured battery are intact and no signs of burning mark or over heat except the top portion of the battery was blown away.
The emergency generator is a standby set, only start up when power outage or test run once of month (half an hr. no load run). The battery was maintained & charged by the "DSE0907,24Vdc, 5 Amp "industrial battery charger 24/7 a year (only -OP and +OP, L, N, Earth, CF, CF was connected and the Boost charge was not connected).
After the local Cummins vendor checked the dc starting system, no fault was found. Replaced the rupture battery with the 4 units of "Yellow top" starting battery and successful start up the emergency generator.
After one day of the battery replacement and the emergency generator "DSE0907" battery charger was found damaged (control card brush), I suspect the battery charging system is connected direct to the battery terminal and in-between do not have any device to disconnect the battery charging system from the battery when the engine was successfully start up. The engine DC alternator over charging the battery charging system and caused the charger control card fail.
Can anyone advise the following:
1. Has anyone use this type of battery charger before?
2. Is "FIAMM L6-11 "battery suitable to use to start the KTA50-G3 Cummins engine?
3. What caused the battery rupture.
4. Any recommendation for battery & charger system the KTA50-G3 Cummins engine.
5. "Yellow top" battery - is it the correct type of battery to use?
*Manufacture requirement for starting up the KTA50G Cummins engine :
Battery Capacity : 1800 amp at 32 F
Battery charging Alternator is 55Amp
