Improving Condenser Vacuum

09/10/2012 2:22 PM

Recently after our unit tripped and when v started the same after two days...we noticed that vacuum is not improving during rolling. normal value before tripping was -89.50KPA. We tried running all CT fans, started an extra CW pump, increased gland sealing pressure to 40 kpa from 30 kpa..checked the vacuum breaker sealing properly but yet vacuum is not going beyond -84kpa. we are having vacuum pump systems and now we r running even tha standby pump..even checked the turbine drains to atmph along with the LP turbine diaphragm. How to improve vacuum now??

Basic question: what are your cooling tower water supply and return temperatures?

The unit tripped and now you find that vac is inadequate...

Why did the unit trip?

The unit had trippd on boiler protection furnace pressure switch malfunction. The type of vacuum pump is Liquid ring Nash pump. Aftr v started rolling of turbine (Vacuum was breakd earlier) this problem is being observd. Today we cleaned the cooling water line of one vacuum pump n whn started gvg a slight improvement to -86kpa.

Seems you might be on the right track then.

Keep cleaning, maybe well overdue....

Are you sure the switch actually malfunctioned and didn't just faithfully operate in response to the inadequate vacuum ( high back pressure)?

1) Need to check the pump itslef along with impeller.

2) Any leakage of steam/vapour inside and hence less vacuum.

3) Check vacuum at different points just to locate the leakage

1) Get a good infrasonic gun to listen for vacuum leaks. Check around condenser for vacuum leaks on condenser and all extraction drain lines to condenser.

2) Check to make sure all vents and drains have been closed. Make sure all extraction drains and vents have been closed as well as heater shell drains and deaerator vents.

3) Make sure Circulating Water side of Condenser has been vented and full of fluid (possible air pockets have been removed).

4) Using Infrasonic Gun, listen for leaks around the Boiler Feed Pump exhaust hood, around the expansion joints between the turbine exhaust and the top of the condenser. (This is a large area and can definitely be a source for air in-leakage.)

Note: If unit outage was caused by low vacuum or back-pressure, the cause is possibly associated with that. This is not a complete list obviously as we don't have a complete description of your system.

we have cleaned both the CW lines of both vacuum pump...and vacuum has improved to -87kpa. Along with we have also attented sum defective isolations valves of extraction to atmph aftr which vacuum has improved considerably. The unit trippd on furnace pressure LL. not due to back pressure. I gues ther was lots of dirt which has sumhow entered the cooling water line..of Heat exchanger of vacuum pump after cleaning it has shown clear results. The pumps impeller is in good condition. thanx alots to evryone for ur replies. its indeed helpful at times like this. the vacuum is now -89kpa. rgds- Vir 540

Stop the leaks. There are non-condensible gases entering the equipment. Stop them getting in and things will improve.

Going back to basics works most of the times. Nice to know that the problem is solved.

There's nothing like a failure to prompt a bit of maintenance.

Hi Wal

"There's nothing like a failure to prompt a bit of maintenance."

How true it is. How many times have accountants/managers seen the need to economise and thought the maintenance budget was a good place to make savings.

It works for a while and then it turns around and bites them right in the bottom right hand corner of their balance sheet.

A clever manager has of course moved on by now and is able to claim the savings he has made on his CV and point to what a terrible job the current manager is doing.

Meanwhile the engineers get to tidy up the mess and do lots of extra hours.

Have you considered helium leak testing of the vacuum system? It offers excellent sensitivity and can pinpoint the exact location of the leak.
