Forging Heat Treatment

Which temperature should be higher, Forging Heat Treatment ( Normalizing/Iso Annealing ) or Case Hradening ( Carburizing )

We did this in high school back in the late forties. We heated to red hot for blacksmithing, reheating when needed. We heated to a creamy colour for annealing, just letting it cool in air. After shaping, we heated to creamy again and dipped it in carbon, repeating this several times. Then we tempered it, I think we chased the straw colour but I'm not certain of that.

great memory.. i've had luck annealing metal in my self-cleaning oven.. i holds at 1,000 degrees f. for a few hours.. the door stays locked until the oven cools.
