How Troy, NY - Home of CR4 - Affected by Storm?

10/29/2012 7:13 AM

Looks like y'all are in for one helluva ride. You may need to shut down the site and get to safety. This storm is going well inland and the site's servers may lose power anyway.

Don't take any chances, CR4 Demigods.

There might not be much staffing at CR4 today, perhaps? The site might be on automatic until the storm subsides.

I suspect the entire Northeast U.S. will lose power if this storm is as bad as they're saying.

H'mm they all ready shut down the government here. Just for a little rain! That's all it's been doing for the last 24 hrs. We are in the predicted path of the storm. Not to make land fall until tomorrow. Troy's about 300 miles north. The rain if little has yet to reach there.

The rain is expected to reach as far inland as Cleveland, Ohio. Troy is not going to escape this if it's as bad as they're predicting.

Last year tropical storm Irene caused a lot of damage with flooding - washed out roads and bridges, flooded and washed away homes, etc. With hurricane Sandy it looks like we aren't going to see much rain - perhaps only a few inches compared to the 15ish from Irene. The majority of the damage will be caused by wind as the eastern side of the storm hits the area.

The worst of the storm should pass us by late Tuesday but we've been warned to expect power outages for up to 10 days. If the power goes out here at HQ then CR4 will be down. GlobalSpec.com's servers are located elsewhere so that site should be okay.

Thank you Lyn. All we can do is stock up on batteries and non-perishables and hope for the best!

Get some camping lanterns. The kind with the little (thorium-oxide-coated) mantles, powered by 'white gas?' They're brighter than a 100 W lamp and go for hours on one fill. I suspect you're going to be out of power for longer than your batteries will last.

If your power doesn't go completely out (we lost one phase in hurricane Gloria back in the 80s) unplug anything with a motor or it'll be toast before long.

Thanks for the tips. In the Northeast we are accustomed to power outages although they are usually related to snow. At least we don't have to worry about not having heat this time.

Been through a few on the East Coast. I was in the so-called 'Perfect Storm.' Was living on Plum Island, Massachusetts at the time and watched as two-storey waves crashed over rooftops. One house was completely demolished as I watched. Over the door was a sign: 'Philips Real Estate Insurance.' Hope his premiums were paid up.

Oh so they protect the servers by putting them in Colorado (Inverness Industrial Park?) and leave y'all there to mop up the mess? Nice blokes!

No, the GS servers have been located in another state for a long time. It's not Colorado, at least not yet!

I worked at Inverness years ago, where I.H.S. is located? Don't ask me what I did at the grassy spot where their lobby is now located, cuz I ain't tellin.

I used to practice getting out of spins on the snow-covered car park at the place I worked (#1 Inverness. Used to be International Medical Corp). The prez' secretary watched out her window in complete horror as I put my Lotus into a spin then pulled out of it, over and over, and very early in the morning when the car park was empty of cars. The practice saved my arse, too, on Montview Blvd in Denver when I hit an icy spot and spun into a busy intersection. Fortunately L. Elans are very close to the ground, top-wise. I was able to maneuver the car up onto the curb, facing traffic. No one moved when the light turned green, so I got out and took a bow.

We're located about 70 miles south of Troy on the Hudson River, and we're expecting high wind gusts and localized flooding.

The biggest problems here will be power outages due to trees coming down on the power lines.

We're very well prepared......12 kW 240A genset to power up the entire house, propane for cooking, loads of C and D batteries for the flashlights and Coleman LED lantern, 2 Coleman camp lanterns (one w/ kerosene conversion and the other White gas), sump pump and pool pump for the basement, ample potable water stored for 2 months, same same with canned food and MRE's (for 3 months), and lots of medical supplies (my wife is a RN). WE also have a Katadyn Virio dual-technology water filter unit and spare GAC and ceramic filters...good enough to filter 2,500 gallons of murkiest & scummiest water imaginable. Also, stocked up w/ 10 gallons of household bleach (unscented) for water disinfection purposes.

I'm not even mentioning my other survivalist equipment and supplies + Bushmaster XM-15 ES2 (AR-15) and enough 5.56mm NATO FMJ & .22LR (w. conversion bolt) ammo to fight a small war. We're prepared much better than most people around here, and this is a rural village and surrounds.....

And yes, we do have a "safe room" in the basement.....

Yes, I AM A PREPPER!

Great! Now those g-men know what to come for when it's time to disarm everyone. Why on Earth would you tell anyone what sort of arms you stock? You might as well put $100k in the trunk of your car and signs to advertise the fact.

Way back in the Olden Days, King Hezekiah showed his potential adversaries his treasury...

It won't matter, because everything is buried in a undisclosed location...even my wife doesn't know where it is!

They'll have to Waterboard me first! LOL

Quit it!

Nobody's going to declare martial law.
