Weldolet Beyond MSS-SP-97

01/05/2013 4:52 AM

I need to purchase a weldolet of 36"x2" (thickness 31.5mm x 14.9mm) to make branch connection from exisitng 36" header pipe. Higher thicknesses are due to C.A. of 12mm. I found that, these thicknessos of run pipe & branch are not covered in MSS-SP-97. What is the way out? Client want to go with weldolet only. Weldolets are available for the sizes covered above MSS-SP-97?. What kind of test/calculation required to verify its strength? Could you somebody help me.

Thanks in advance,

K.Uthayasankar.

I would inquire of Bonney Forge, maker of Weldolets™.

WFI is another name that is associated with the manufacture of "O-Let" type fittings. Their (pdf) Catalog lists "O-Lets as "Pipets and included in the notes at the bottom of pages 6, 7, 8, etc. is the word Flats. These are for use on Weld Caps, Elliptical Heads for Vessels and flat surfaces.

I suggest you investigate here (http://www.wfi-intl.com/uploads/docs/WFIprodcatalogv6.2.pdf) and see if you find an solution to your problem.

PennPiper - Bonney Forge owns WFI now. WOI is another company that offers Olet fittings. WFI and WOI were both started by Bob Ryan I believe. He had the idea of straight thru bore design offering fab shops lower welding volumes. Both companies offer quite an array of reinforcing products.

we require to follow asme b16.25 figure 1, which gives the right definition of the groove. generally, the designers get lost on "groove" and not sure and to be on the safe side they ask the fabricator to weld till the rib of the skirt inviting broadly distortion due to un- controlled heat input in the localised area (in case of lower wall thicknesses), wastage of man power and wastage of filler metal.

point to ponder is preferably to have a transition fillet weld to reduce the stress concentration factor at the toe of the weld, generally sized to 0.7 x thickness of parent metal or 6mm.

thanks,

ashbandy
