Call a service tech.

Call the manufacturer.

Call a service tech.

Consult the operator's manual

Call a service tech.

It's obvious that you have no mechanical person on staff. Call a service tech.

Go on-line and search for an answer. Do you know the manufacturer?

Sir I no longer have a manual for this motor and I cant contact the manufacturer. this is a very old grab machine, the brand of the motor is Linde.I tried to go on line to get some information but I havent gotten the information I want. Can you give me a minimum safe clearance. The typical clearance or range. It so happen that the nameplate of the motor is already unreadable. I cant get the gpm and horse power anymore and the rpm. sorry for the bother...

Above picture is a cutaway from a LINDE catalogue you could find by Google as I did. As I mentioned the barrel is between the swash plate and the distribution and if it can transmit torques it is free in axial direction so that a hydrostatic bearing forms between its right surface and the distribution plate. The distance between the surfaces will depend on several factors as I mentioned and should be free to install I do not see how you intend to give a gap. If you put a washer you risk the destruction of your mirror and at least high leaks. For hydrostatic bearings the gap is in the range of a few 0.01mm.Solar Eagle gave an inch value (I presume) which represents 0.457 mm ! It is by far too high. If you have not any original document put the parts to form an exploded view and make a couple of pictures.I am sorry to say that I am deeply disappointed by counsel based on nothing.

Can you show a cutaway of your motor ? In general the clearance is due to a balance of forces from cylinders and oil film. The clearance depends on working pressure and rpm. An oil wedge forms and carries the loads and this is done to minimize the leaks at the distribution plate.

May be your motor has a special design with a fixed clearance. Think that for same pressure in case of a constant clearance the leaks are proportional to pressure/viscosity and clearance ^3 if the Re number is under the laminar limit in the gap.
