Common Error

06/09/2013 11:49 AM

Good evening,

It is very embarrassing to me when I can't know some basic ideas about mechanics as I am expert in mechanical gadget and equipment. It's really ridiculous and feels so shame…

Do you face that type of problems???

No.

You have yet to prove that "I am expert in mechanical gadget and equipment"

The questions you are asking tell a different story.

Everybody has days like that. One of the most famous examples is the drinking bird.

Supposedly none other than Albert Einstein was once stumped how this little fellow kept running. He could not figure out what was the energy source that kept him moving. He knew that there had to be one, perpetual motion is impossible. Many claim that this story is a myth. I prefer to believe that one of the most famous theoretical physicists of last century was briefly stumped.

I have always been a mechanical genius type that could fix or repair anything, I was confident but humble about my abilities....If you do this type of work for a living you must exude confidence to your customers that no matter the problem, it will be fixed properly because you are a professional that takes great pride in the quality of your work....Success at anything requires a disciplined approach and strong work ethic an attitude that there is no goal achieved but the comfort in the realization that the journey is the goal, and the way in which you live your life is the vehicle....Your reaction to encountering unknowns in the course of your job should be that these unknowns are expected, and conquering each one brings you closer to success, cherish them as the weapons that will defeat your enemy, the malfunctioning device......

YES I HAVE THOSE DAYS TOO!

Today my wife was helping me organize the shop and put up new pallet shelving.

She was carrying around some of my 100+ # heavy grade hardwood 48" x 48" pallets without trouble or complaint and even set one up on the second level shelf that is just over her head.

Until I mentioned how heavy they are. Now she can't even budge one on the floor.

I have yet to figure out how that works.

I suspect it's part of the same phenomenon I have seen with her inability to properly close a friggen door when going in or out of the house or vehicles some days.

You have to choose your words wisely before speaking them

My girlfriend had her foot operated last february on where she'd be off of work for 6-8 weeks, my company is expanding one of its facilities in the north woods, were Im managing and she wanted to come along.

Well she hit all the resale shops and she found a old outdoor patio furniture for inlet 70 dollars wanted me to look at it.

Cushions were like brand new but the iron was poor, with some of the welds broken. I told her THAT'S you project, and I firmly said, I don't sand and I don't paint. And if you understand that, i even had her repeat that.

After she repeated that I don't sand or paint, I told her to offer them $25.00 for the set because of the broken welds. And i woukd weld them. Of which the store accepted her offer.

Well, I put the last coat of paint on them today. :/

The moral if the story, when it comes to men making agreements with women, you've lost as soon as you open your mouth.

Oh believe me in the last two years I have become a master at choosing my words when it comes to what I want or need help with or of what projects I will help her with.

It still bewilders me that I can tell her in exact words what I will or will not do then have her repeat it back to me in exact word of word context only to have her interpretation of what we both agreed to completely change 15 minutes later.

From your previous post.........I am a student of physics and finally completed my Masters in Applied physics

Do you face that type of problems???

This is very common from recent graduates. What you need is some practical experience, and possibly a different course in a practical mechanical engineering field depending on what you want to do or learn.

It's really ridiculous and feels so shame…

A Masters degree alone does not make you an expert in the world, it is merely a learning tool like all the other university degrees and certificates. Many universities do not make this clear to students and so many students can have a tough time when faced with the cold hard facts of reality - "A have a <qualification> but I still know practically nothing that helps me?"

Without practical understanding, hands-on interaction and personal learning and development you have an incomplete tool box full of tools but no plans or materials to build anything.

Think of something you want to build and make a little personal project to build it. This will teach you a lot about the basics, much of which they don't teach anywhere and can only come from some practical experience. We can help here on CR4, but the best results are if you do most of the work yourself.

You are by no means the first University graduate I have advised, and won't be the last.

Work I worked for a man 40 odd years ago that was one of the best engineers I have ever worked for. He was brought up in the old country where he was made to work each of the trades (3-4 years, each) before going off to engineering school. When a print was given to you by my him, you could make book it was right on the money. I laugh every so often when I think of Karl and how many times he would make someone tear out a days work because it was not to his specifications. Then they would argue (or try to ) that it was ok to pry the pipe over to line it up, or what ever. Did not fly with his standards.

Engineering is a voyage of discovery. At the beginning of something, one knows nothing about it. At the end, one knows an awful lot and hands it over to someone else.
