EOT Cranes

03/07/2014 3:21 AM

Sir, one of our Kone EOT crane (60T, Span= 41.5m) is showing immense wheel collar rubbing. The rail sides are worn out, so is the wheel collar. The bogie is floating, the span and Skewness are within the limits, but the cranes is not floating. Can anyone assist me in this regard ? Thank you.

Hi Wahsoo,

Contact Kone, get them to survey the crane and quote you to bring it back to it's original specification.

Best regards,

John

Always go with the people who do this for a living and have a proven track record, it saves in the long run.

Hi Wahsoo,

I honestly think you should change your priorities and make it your first.

Does it depend on what part of the world you are in as to whether you can carry out repairs to overhead cranes?

You would not be allowed to repair a crane in the UK unless you were qualified to do it.

Your insurers wouldn't cover you for any claims resulting from operating it.

The thing to bear in mind is, if it fails, it is possible it will be catastrophic and likely to do so when it is under load (working) the likelihood of injury to your workers is at it's maximum.

Err on the side of caution (safety),

Best regards,

John

jesw55 has given you the solution.

Call a crane tech and have them put it right. Give them lots more information than you provide here.

No one of your staff can fix it. Get someone who can.

That won't be strangers with no idea what is not right.

First, how long has the unit been in service?? Sounds to me like you may have uneven wear on the drive wheels - I have had this situation before on a brand new crane where the wheels were not the same diamater(I guess QA really screwed that one up). Uneven wear will cause the crane to skew when in motoin. Check the diameter of the wheels, use a pi tape, if you have one, for best results. If the diameters are the same, I can't help any more.

Since 10 months. 3 months back the drive wheel shaft broke. We replaced the wheel shaft.

It sound like, now you've given more info, that your shaft change has something to do with the slewing of your long travel. Did you use Kone spares? Also did you check why it broke and did you check the wheel diameter?

As stated.... DO NOT attempt to rectify this, in fact I would if you can park the crane up at the far end of the bay until Kone come and sort out your problem.

However if you do use it until such time as technically competent engineers arrive, use it as little as possible, check at least twice a day for wear on the long travel wheel flanges, as they are to ONLY thing that is keeping your crane on the track.. They wear away... your crane has it's first, and last, flying lesson!!

Follow jesw55 suggestions. Anybody to make any suggestion how to fix this without being on site, is a bigger fool than you. The liabilities involved in doing our own repairs ..., lets just say, there will be new board members made up of the family members of the deceased and you'll be looking for a new job after you get out of prison in 10 or 15 years.

Re: EOT Cranes

Please check following:-

1. Wheel span and rail span.

2. check diagonal span for both pairs of wheel.

3. Normally there should be gap of 5 mm between wheels and rails. In this wheel is there any gap between wheel and rail.

4. Is wheel Assembly proper?.

5. Please check wheel run out.

You will require experienced man to do all the above checks. So hire crane expert to help you out. "Kone" Finland is one of the big crane mfr. of the E.O.T Cranes, how such defect has developed it is surprising. May be it is fabricated in some other country by Franchisee.

Here's the link to Konecranes, http://www.konecranesusa.com/equipment/overhead-cranes from there you can go to page http://www.konecranesusa.com/crane-safety-0

In other words, contact Konecranes, replacing the motor(s) with something other than OEM that the equipment designed for could lead to a real can of worms.
