Earthing Mesh Substation

04/10/2014 2:40 AM

- Would it be possible to remove the cables jacket for cable conductor intended to be used as wire mesh conductor?
- I was told my client the reason they insisted why the cables insulation not to be removed from the conductor is to avoid rusting of the equipment. I don't think it's possible.

Of course it is.

Just follow the instructions in IEE 0u8-1-2 rev 1 class 2 subparagraph 42.

Rust never sleeps.

What do you mean by IEE 0u8-1-2 rev 1?

Stripping insulation off conductors destined to be interred earthing (grounding) elements is essential not just possible. If bare copper cable is unavailable and insulated is then the decision to strip is moot really.

It should be the correct size.

If it is not bare then it is not grounded to the errrth....

Regarding the rusting concerns of your client....this concern may or may not be valid. tell us more about what you are faced with and better advice will follow.

I have the same thought as you, I never seen earthing conductor with insulation, plus it will cost more.

Look at it like this; for building an electric fence, you would want bare mesh connections. If mesh rusting was a problem you would use galvanized steel, stainless steel, or some other non-rusting conductive mesh material.

I think OP's client is worried about corrosion of the steel assets not the interred grounding elements.

OP's client needs to quantify their concerns and OP needs to address or dismiss these.

It seems to me, there are a few cases in which the insulated conductor is recommended for a grounding grid. See [for instance]:

Interesting piece, thanks.

OP has not stated which iron elements his client is concerned about.

That piece was discussing cathodic protection of interred iron piping adjacent to or in close proximity to copper earthing elements.

It discussed insulated ie dielectrically coated, iron but not insulated copper earthing elements.

If a copper interred element is insulated then it's not performing a function ie it is not an earthing system element.

Yeah, cathodic protection....

The distinction between "earthing" and "grounding" was interesting.

I might read it again when I am sober. Or not....
