Coal to Diesel

10/06/2005 12:42 PM

There has been the technology around for over 50 years to convert coal to diesel fuel using a process called Fischer-Tropsch. The diesel fuel from coal is inherently cleaner than the diesel fuel we think of today that exhausts dirty sulfur laden fumes out our tail pipes. This new diesel gives off less pollutants then today's gasoline and on top of that allows cars to get 50 MPG+ (That's a double win). We have a large supply of coal in this country that could be utilized. Hey this seems like a no-brainer to really push this technology and usage of American resources. I think this is truly the needed alternative fuel we should adopt until technology can fully get us away from the combustion engine.

Heck yeah

It seems like there would be significant start-up costs as there is no industrial infrastructure in place to use the F-T process, but it really is a no brainer. This should be done - either through private industry or government.

I'm sure this comes down to politics. But you would think that the oil companies would be all over developing the infrastructure before the oil is gone or before another inferior technology is implemented. I think what it comes down to is something that will hold us over until technology can get us away from burning fossile fuels altogether. I don't have faith in these hybrid cars were being fed. They are just an expensive band-aid.
