Seven New Wonders of the World Named....

07/08/2007 11:57 PM

.... and the 4500 year old pyramid of Giza isn't one of them.

The Seven New Wonders of the World are:

  • The Great Wall of China
  • Petra in Jordan
  • Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer
  • Peru's Machu Picchu
  • Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid
  • The Colosseum in Rome
  • India's Taj Mahal

http://www.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/07/06/seven.wonders/index.html

For the record, I don't recognize any "Seven Wonders" list that excludes the Pyramid of Giza.....and Pluto is still a planet.

Roger

There is an eighth wonder, 'I wonder why they make this crap up.'

As to Pluto, why do they think the millions of people who grew up calling it a planet are going to change?

'I wonder why they make this crap up.'

A cynic might suggest to enhance the global tourism industry at the expense of CO2 emissions..........

What about the Seven Wonders of the City of Norwich?

  • Thorpe Station
  • The Castle
  • Pottergate
  • Jarrolds
  • New Costessey
  • Vue cinema
  • Sale of the Century, with Nicholas Parsons.

You are demonstrating a frighteningly familiar knowledge of NC. I'm half expecting your icon to turn yellow and green.....

How about the Seven Wonders of Chelmsford:

  • The Cathedral
  • Springfield Basin
  • Central Park
  • The Army & Navy roundabout
  • (there is no no.5)
  • Victoria Road multi-storey car park
  • The Army & Navy roundabout.

The point is that all these things are dreamed up by the tourism industry to encourage travel there! A con? Surely not.....

What about the secret nuclear bunker? Or the birthplace of radio plaque? (I have family in Chelmsford)

Kris is probably right. It's probably just a clever marketing scheme. Still, I don't like that the Pyramids were left off. Victorian scholars would be aghast.

Hi PlbMak. The top of the list should read: North Sea defences, the Netherlands. Spencer.

I would think that if they were talking about NEW wonders it would be recent milestones in archetecture. There are a great many new feats being constructed now that, although are being done with modern machinery, are a tribute to the persons who created them and those who have built or are building them now.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm with Roger on this one!

The statue of Christ the Redeemer is wonderful and beautiful and an engineering marvel -- but it was constructed in 1931. When you look at the technology and motive power sources available at the time, it is not nearly as impressive as the other wonders. They were all constructed with animal or muscle power!

As to Pluto being a planet, I always thought he was a dog, but Donald Duck told that's Goofy.

I agree with bp01.

Also, as mentioned in other thread, some of the candidates were constructed with much lives lost and resources used but only for the benefit of the few. Or the main reason for construction is mainly aesthetic purposes. Maybe the organizer should . have these two considerations as main criterias for the choices:

1. Minimal or no human lives were lost during construction

2. Has enormous benefit (economically, i highly recommend) to the majority of the populace

In this case, I would vote for Banaue Rice Terraces: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banaue_Rice_Terraces

I would have to second that nomination. Never seen it in person, but the photos are incredible. It must be absolutely beautiful.

For you Roger, and me too, and a lot of people around the world, don't recognize any "Seven Wonders" list that excludes the Pyramids of Giza.

Thank you Roger and thanks to all people around the world for your nice feeling towards Giza Pyramids and Ancient Egyptian Civilization.
