Help on Transformer Test

02/10/2015 3:38 PM

Fellow Engineers, please can any one help me with the importance of conducting tan delta test on transformers and transformer oil. I need your view.

Thanks

You might at least enter the words "tan delta" into the Search this Forum box on the right, Mildred. All will be revealed.

I tried it and wound up on a nude beach.

That's silly. Funny, but still silly.

"Silly" is my only defense against the possible atrocities I see here, were potentially hazardous situations involving seemingly lead poisoned humanoids are at the controls of operations, systems or processes that would threaten the lives of dense populations

Don't bother with these tests.

The data would only be needed in case that transformer explodes, killing innocent bystanders.

The Tan Delta test is conducted on Transformers to check their insulation,by applying voltage of a very low frequency (generally less than 1 Hz) across the transformer (after isolating it from the system).

Tanᵹ= IR/IC

If the insulation is perfect, the measured leakage current value related to the resistance of transformer's windings (IR) will be low and approximately the same for all ranges of test voltages..

A good answer. I would only add that the test frequency is generally less than 0.1 Hz, and that the test voltage should be started off at no more than the transformer windings' rated values and gradually increased (up to X2) if, and only if, the plotted graph reveals a nominally straight horizontal line, it will rise a bit with elevated voltage, but will do so more sharply if the insulation is compromised). Any tendency for the dissipation factor values to rise indicates lowered insulation resistance.

Follow the testing instructions carefully, especially with regards to isolation and jumpering, as very strange results can be had if not followed explicitly.

The tan delta test should always be carried out as part of new transformer acceptance so that benchmarks for future insulation testing can be set.
