General Motors is stepping decisively into the future with the announcement that it will design and build its own electric motors within two years. I dunno. I like the sound of it, but I think it's a little bit like a kid saying "I'm gonna make a spaceship!"

Not that motor manufacturing is rocket science. But trying to pull together everything from scratch in a 2-year timeframe and producing in 3 seems a little ambitious to me.

Does anyone know where these electrical motors will be made by GM?

I was interested in supplying the test systems for these motors.

"God Bless the Child thats got its own."

Chtank, a member here, exposed us to the concept of electric wheel motors.

A lot of free ideas of great value and insight float around here on this forum.

Elimination of the whole drivetrain and putting the motors right into the wheels makes a great deal of sense to me.

If your source of power weighs more than the vehicle body, & engine, cutting out all the weight of the transmission and drivetrain is very attractive.

When I was in high school, my automech teacher, Mr. Fox, firmly taught us that an "Engine" was an internal combustion device. A "Motor" used magnetism (Electromotive force)

so I think they will still be General Motors
