Internet Curves Ahead?

Posted April 04, 2010 8:22 AM

Definitely cool technology-wise, voice-controlled Internet access and enhanced driver interface functionality via smartphones will be welcomed by many as the ultimate driver's multitasking tool. The quandary, claim safety experts, is that drivers have a hard enough time keeping their eyes on the road and hands upon the wheel. With text-to-speech conversion, hearing "tweets" from friends would be "way cool." Safe or distracting?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Acoustics & Audio Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Acoustics & Audio Technology today.

"voice-controlled Internet access"

Sure, but will it respond to "Hurry up!" when you are trying to load a page?

Okay, back on topic. This is unsafe, but being marketed as implied safe. There are studies that prove that even hands-free cell phones cause driver distraction. Heck, even a nagging passenger can be a distraction.

This gadget simply tries to justify itself based on the premise that it is dangerous to manually text, so voice command is safer. The statement is true, but the logic still a falacy because it is still dangerous to be distracted while driving.

I am sure things have improved to solve some of the problems since the 80's./ One of which is I had integrated a voice activated programs I believe it was called COVOX. for some hands free CAD, basically to manually measure scale and measurements from building interiors, to created a script to import/run into CAD. When worked it increased productivity of once took 4 hours to approx. 45 min. And increased accuracy by reviewing the script

The problem at the time, after training the software for your voice recognition.

After about 5 minutes of work some people (including mine) ones voice becomes more hoarse, (others were not effected) and results in recognition becomes poor, And since it could not become a standard department wide, I dropped development on it.

Just curious what happens with heavy usage on the internet, and of course there are privacy issues.

or how about the multi-tasking group who will be on the phone while on the net. no not you fred, I'm talking to my VCI on the other line.......oh message coming in jus a sec....oops just drove through a red light.

A couple of years ago I was driving a lot

I found I could do 2 things at a time

drive + navigate [dash mounted 7" gps]

Drive + talk on the phone

not all three

I used to joke that I could talk & drive, but dialing was probably gonna kill me.

on more than one occasion I missed a turn, while talking on the phone.

my safety increased, when I switched to a blackberry that had a voice activated addressbook.

I did have to modify some of the listings to differentiate similar sounding listings, I also made unique listing for office & cell phones for some contacts.

worked ok

I can't imagine using the system to write a text or email, I'm sure that there will be many very funny misunderstandings, from messages not being proofread thoroughly

Many times I would say

"that sounds good send it to me in an email"

I always used a plantronics wired head set that had a boom mike. wireless sound bad & do things like need charging in the middle of a conversation...

I use an Ipod instead of radio or cd's, less fussing about. The most input I have to give is next song...

talking I have done that, but its calling the number, its like adjusting the radio, you are no longer in full control of your vehicle...distracted even just partly.

I have a navigator, it actually makes me a safer driver, concentrate on my driving and not making the next turn off. even though I do occasional miss a turn-off with the navigator, but it brings me back.

To even contemplate such devices ought to be outlawed, and the potential buyers ought to be dragged into the street for a good old fashioned stoning!!!!!!

OK... Maybe that is a tad strong... BUT this sounds like the absolute distraction on the road, and with increased highway speeds or the overload of things going on in town, this is a recipe for disaster. I HATE cell phones on the road, yet there are enough people that feel we are "necessary" enough to fight the outlawing of them tooth and nail. I don't fight to have them outlawed, but I would certainly vote in the affirmative after all the close calls I have seen caused by people with phones in their ears traveling at 70 MPH.

Every day I pass a billboard with the headline "Text Message causes 11 car pile-up". Yet we are considering putting an internet connected computer in the car so the driver can do searches for e-mails, tweets, news, or smut. Why can't we just enjoy the ride and be entertained by the radio? I think radio tuning causes enough accidents and close calls, we don't need anything else going on in the car.

I am shocked any responsible company is even contemplating offering it. Of course, there is the opportunity to come out with it first and make a fast few Million, so all responsibility goes right out the window... The companies "developing" this technology need just remember: Whatever happens to the average American is not their fault, but someone else's. It won't be long until the injury lawyers find out the millions made by the device makers is worth going after as reparations for the lives ended and destroyed by such irresponsible equipment.

Sure they can hear tweets from friends, but replying will require more focus from the driver. People don't want to stay that connected to the Internet just so they can hear about updates, they'll want to respond.

People barely pay enough attention to the road as it is, and adding another thing to do while driving doesn't help.

Driving and multitasking should never be used in the same sentance.
