Making a Move to Wireless

Posted April 19, 2010 7:50 AM

Proponents of wireless technology point to real-time data sharing, lower installation and maintenance cost, flexibility in valve placement, and other benefits. But, is there a downside to wireless such as security issues, signal switching speeds, signal degradation, and EMI and RF interference? The trend toward wireless valve technology seems to be gaining steam, but despite wireless' upside, challenges still exist. Do hardwired and standalone valves still have their place? What is your experience with wireless?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Valve Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Valve Technology today.

That useless teaser did not induce me to subscribe.

Nor have any of the previous ones.

Which is too bad, because I might otherwise be interested.

"But, is there a downside to wireless such as security issues, signal switching speeds, signal degradation, and EMI and RF interference?"

Sounds like you answered your own question!

It all depends on the application, whether with valves or other devices. Would I trust a wireless valve to water my lawn? Sure.

Would I want a wireless valve controlling the brakes in my car? Absolutely not!

I wouldn't even trust it to ring a doorbell.
Believe me I tried...
Wireless internet router too .
Give hard wiring every time..I mean anything 'wireless' still needs power, so du'h that's wires...or batteries...ah yes batteries... oh frabjous joy!
I'd rather have root canal treatment than go wireless.

As somebody that makes his living from wireless technology... I couldn't agree with Del more!

Fact is, the radio wave just "replaces" the wire. What you are trying to do is get a signal from point A to Point B. Wires have been around for a long time and, therefore, the infrastructure is pretty reliable. Even considering wild backhoes.

Radio, on the other hand, is less reliable, especially in a mobile environment. So much can block or interfere with a radio wave. So, I advise our customers that for mission critical applications, wires is better than waves. If they want to go with radio as the primary connection, then there better be a back up plan. That reinforces what Stevem said.

Oh, me and my BIG mouth...the side of one of my premolars has just cracked right off. Fortunately I have an appointment to have a crown* fitted tomorrow and hopefully he'll patch it up then.

It's all due to that volcanic ash, Del!

I hope it all goes well. Just don't let the dentist install any wireless devices in the crown!
