Videoconferencing: Mission-Critical for Your Business?

Posted May 09, 2010 8:09 AM

Communications is the life-blood of business. Reuters reports that Cisco Systems, maker of "telepresence" and videoconferencing equipment, is saying that during the recent air travel disruptions in Europe (caused by the volcanic ash from a volcano in Iceland), the networking giant witnessed a huge spike in videoconferencing. Companies apparently substituted video meetings for the face-to-face variety.

Is video conferencing an important communications medium for your organization? If your organization is based or has offices in Europe, did you ramp up your videoconferencing activities during the air travel ban? And, even if you were unaffected by that incident, has the specter of such travel disruptions caused your organization to take a second look at videoconferencing?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

The recent volcanic ash incident is a perfect example of factors that make video conferencing mission critical.

Most businesses in my locale are yet to buy into the reasons for deploying video conferencing except for TV broadcast organisations.

Apart from saving time and reducing travel frequency/cost, it also comes in handy in contingencies.

While videoconferencing is a great tool for business in general, co-located working is still the best for R&D, in my experience. i was heading a design center for GE before retirement, and i was often surprised by the bloomers we almost made due to (a) language problems and (b) cultural differences.

My best experience of co-located working came when my engineer (who was very poor in English) went to France and interacted with the top designer there (who only knew French!). Using sign language mostly and some online translators when absolutely necessary, they managed to complete an excellent design project well ahead of schedule. They became very good friends, and the indian engineer has learnt enough French to keep in touch!

The language and cultural difference were overcome by the mutual respect demonstrated by working side-by-side. Would not have happened by remote dialogue i believe.
