An
article in the New York Times ponders the age-old question of what
talent is, and how we get it. Is it inherited, or do we develop it as
we grow and learn? In other words, is talent a matter of nature or
nurture? The author takes the position that if we think of talent as
something we're born with, and can't do anything about, "then we're
selling ourselves and our children short" — and cites scientific
research that indicates that the nature-vs.-nurture debate is too
simplistic, and that "the interplay between environment and genes
is far more intricate than that." It appears that traits like perseverance and confidence have a lot to do with our ability to eventually succeed — and indeed, excel — at what we do. Where do you come down on the
question of talent, or our ability to excel? Which of the findings
discussed in this article resonate with you?
