Meet the Moderator and Blogger: SavvyExacta

Posted May 16, 2010 5:01 PM by Jaxy

Now everyone has the opportunity to learn about their favorite bloggers and moderators. This week, we are featuring SavvyExacta, whose contributions to both the Animal Science and Technotourist blog add valuable content and interesting reads to CR4.

Tell me about yourself (major, college, work experience)

I've got a lifetime of hands-on experience with different types of animals. On the academic side, I have degrees in Equine Studies, Management, and am wrapping up an MA in Communications. This month marks my fifth anniversary with GlobalSpec. Why am I spending my time on a website for engineers? My grandfather was a GE engineer for a long time – he designed and helped repair power transformers. My dad was a mechanical engineer in the pulp and paper industry. Needless to say by helping them out with household and building projects I've developed a little bit of an engineering mind. Finding creative solutions to problems is fun, I love my level, and I'm often complemented on how neatly I write numbers.

Why did you choose to moderate/blog?

I started blogging about two years ago because I like learning new things and sharing my experiences. Since then I've written over 100 blog entries for Animal Science and TechnoTourist. About a month and a half ago I began moderating as a way to become more involved with the site.

Favorite part about moderating/blogging?

Blogging is fun because there's so much to learn about every topic. There are always lots of cool things to find out and share. Getting paid to research things I'm interested in isn't a bad job.

Blogging topics: How do you choose?

Sometimes I blog about first-hand experiences, for example, my dog's surgery to repair herniated discs in her neck. Other times I research topics that interest me - like the surface material used at racetracks. Or people will email me links to articles that are in the news like the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Favorite part about CR4?

There's a lot to be learned from the blogs section - these are particularly interesting since they're often first-hand experiences. The discussions are also great because there's input from such a wide variety of people.

How or from whom did you learn about CR4?

Moose asked me if there was anything I was interested in blogging about. I thought many of the CR4 users might have pets or be interested in animals, so I started blogging about animal science.

What would you say is the most interesting thing about you?

I feel safer on the back of a horse than walking on my own two feet. I'm very klutzy and can trip and fall just walking down a hallway. It's always been this way – even when I was younger. I prefer to stay away from the oven and knives!

What are your hobbies?

Right now work and graduate school consume most of my time. I'm just nine credits away from graduation so hobbies will resume soon! Those include horseback riding, reading, playing with my two beagles, gardening, traveling, photography, and being a horse racing fan. I love living within driving distance of Saratoga Racecourse – the U.S.'s oldest Thoroughbred racetrack.

Favorite website & why?

My homepage tabs are Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Mint, Weather.com, The Knot, and CR4. I like to stay in touch and plan!

Motto/Advice you live by?

My mom always said "everything works out for the best in the long run". This reminds me to be patient – my body doesn't always let me do things as fast as my mind wants to!

Favorite childhood memory?

When I was 8 my mom and I got a "white" pony – it was the first horse for both of us! We all learned a lot in the 19 years we were together.

Thinking of your love of horses...
Coming out of the FA Cup Final at Wembley there were rows of mounted police to keep order (not needed as it was a good natured affair). The horse looked huge and they were superbely disciplined amongst a sea of supporters (over 80 thousand were there) chanting loudly, some of them were patting the horses and chatting to the police...
I kept well clear and gave them the respect they deserved.
They made a very impressive site, of course it also made me think of the scale of medieval warfare, being charged by mounted opposition must have been very scary (even if you had a longbow in your hand!)

Police horses are big - some of the biggest. They are usually draft horses or draft horse crosses. These guys are chosen for their size (intimidation factor) and temperament. Police horses have to be steady and pretty much unflappable. They go through thorough testing and training and very few make the cut! One of the tests includes having beach balls thrown at them and bounced off. Another includes firecrackers.

Yes, and no...

Draft horses are NOT used for police work. Thoroughbreds or TB crosses are, for the size factor, speed, and agility needed for the job. DH's are not agile, or quick to respond in an emergency. (Also, if one rolls on you, you are not likely to get up unharmed!) The feed and care of draft horses is high, and possible health problems, as well as a horse breed's longevity feature into the decision.

TB's are often cheap to purchase, quick to train, and meet the eligibility requirements. QH/TB crosses are ideal for police work, since there is that "bomb proof" factor pretty much built in to the QH genetic profile. But training and desensitization will bomb proof even the highest strung TB. Usually, horses bred to race but not fast enough to make the cut will be snatched up at a young age, and trained for police work. If they don't make the grade, they are then sold off for dressage, steeplechase, or trail horses.

TB's make good trail horses, and are excellent prospects in dressage, etc. They are smart, bond well with their rider and are extremely agile and alert. The human/horse bond is very strong in thoroughbreds, and there is usually a intuitive connection between the two.

BTW, Black Beauty was a thoroughbred! Just a little bit of trivia

The ones in my area are definitely draft crosses (emphasis on the draft because size ups the intimidation factor). Here are some other places that use draft crosses:

http://www.providencepolice.com/mounted_command/meet_horses.html

http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/articles/2009/08/02/five_of_bostons_retired_police_horses_have_taken_up_residence_in_plymouth/

http://tuesdayshorse.wordpress.com/2010/02/10/auction-of-police-horses-from-disbanded-san-diego-unit-ends-thursday/

I have never seen the mounted police here use a thoroughbred (or anything that doesn't look like it has draft in it - we have some big officers). Although I suppose they might if they needed to move quickly. And I have to argue about drafts not being agile. I have jumped a percheron/thoroughbred cross that did not look like he had much thoroughbred in him - and although it sounded like I was jousting, not jumping, he had plenty of scope for 3-foot courses!

I don't think that it is a moderator thing. Maybe I just picked the right image? I think .gif images are hit or miss when it comes to animation... perhaps I was just lucky?

There have been extensive trials carried out into this (in the place that can not be mentioned) and unless the gif was used on CR4 before a certain date, it won't work in a post. No new (or re-loaded) gif avatars work either.

But let's not go there, let's hope no-one spots this else this thread will rival the Thread that Cannot Speak Its Name....

Actually, I'm quite pleased about this change, since certain users were wont to over poplate their posts with gifs.

Gee the things you learn on Wiki;

"In the Falkland Islands, Percherons are crossed with Criollo horses to produce horses used on the cattle ranges. In Australia, they are crossed with native horses to produce horses for competition and range work."

Australia has a native horse!

Ask the French! SPLARF!

Shetland pony over rice pilaf...THAT'S a good use of a bad critter!

Ponies (not to be confused with 'pones'), especially Shetland ponies, are inherently evil. They must have been put here as a food source. The only explanation I could come up with for why they're here.

OK, I know some people have had wonderful experiences with their ponies growing up (i.e. their ponies weren't intent on killing them) But, statistically, those warm fuzzy memories are few and far between, and usually patinaed with age, so they look better now than reality was then.

Any accident with a Shetland was no accident. They meant it.

I understand that people in certain parts of the world choose to include horses as a part of their diet. That's an individual choice. It's not for me - just as I wouldn't eat a dog or cat.

I also know that some types of people like sharp sticks. We all have our vices, I guess. Mine's ice cream.

I wouldn't worry too much Chris - what you have is an "blinkered" inventors view there. I.e, everything that can be made to justify - is thrown in. Horses are rather fuel inefficient. If he wants to argue that, he should use an ox or bullock.

Then again, if he did that, he wouldn't have the need to "quick release" the chariot. But I guess that "need" is out of 'speed' and not understanding horses past that asset. As the cart "concept" shows, in many 'horse ergonomics interface' details, it's all about him. I wouldn't want to be his pony.

On the other hand, properly treated horses like to work - just as some humans like to do their jobs. It's hardly slavery if they get excited about the prospect of racing or mustering, or just an adventure out and about with their human, or a day of labor, paid for in housing, special feed and grooming.

Well put! Our horses love to see us come out with the saddles...they know there is an adventure ahead. I have found that our dogs are much happier when they have a 'job' that they are in charge of...be it deer patrol, hunting gophers and ground squirrels, or longing the pones..they also know when it's time for a particular job, and get anxious when they need to be let out to do it.

Chariot Boy is looking for the golden fleece, IMO. I stand by my belief that anyone wh has fond memores of owning a Shetland pony, and doesn't believe that said pony had ulterior motives(i.e. destroying all humans and total and complete world domination...well...at least the first part)is delusional at best, and should seek out a good therapist. <shut up, Connery!>

Nice to know more about SavvyExacta and good to know that aspect on horses.

I like and admire horses but never ridden on one before.

The horse is the symbol of strength and a combination of this and my childhood memories of movies featuring fights and other activities on horse backs fuelled my admiration for horses.

When the time came to open my first bank account as a teenager, guess what, I chose the bank with horse logo.

cheers,

ethobil

In our case, the bank became very big, strong and reliable with a strong customerbase. Unfortunately, the bank has gone full circle at present, as it is one of the "sick" banks according to the banking regulator's ratings.

cheers,

Animal Science, but Political Science is prohibited?

I'm listening to Pat Metheny, who is very peaceful with forays into the heroic, and still I am irked.

I don't know what ponies are good for except for helping children learn to ride. Posting made more sense to me and Western riding seemed to have no in between.

I'm glad I have a car.

I'm said I can't bet on the horses around where I live. I haven't seen a Racing Form in years. Still I know what to look for.

"Animal Science, but Political Science is prohibited?"

Not quite the dichotomy of the horse lover who loves big money racing. A gambler or bookmaker or spectator for "the atmosphere" - yes I can understand they just turn away when a horse "breaks down". It's remarkably common. And most are preceded by strenuous application of the whip.

Personally, I would be less bilious seeing the whip used on the trainers and jockeys, along with the needle, than I am when a horse with a shattered leg tries to run on, with it's hoof flapping around on a string of skin.

I wonder which "science" could address this, just as I wonder which "science" provided the impetus for horse breeding and promulgation across the planet?

Yah! Don't even get me started on Crufts. Let's not forget cats...good job they can't domesticate squirrels.

Perfect points Mr Squirrel

"An Animal Aid study of available evidence - including 15,000 pages of race results - shows that around 375 horses are raced to death every year. Some 30% of these fatalities occur during, or immediately after a race, and result from a broken leg, back, neck or pelvis; fatal spinal injuries; exhaustion; heart attack, or burst blood vessels. The other victims perish from training injuries or are killed after being assessed by their owners as no-hopers."

The last, particularly, is light on, in my experience, but killing by training or racing can be claimed on insurance, whereas the knacker's decision is just a tax write off.

Invested in the wrong horse? - enter it in "the gallops" - Oh, the Romance!

(sorry about referencing your testicles - but obviously Dell made me do it)

The science of such events is important to understand as best it is possible.

I've nearly died in an accident at work. People die all the time day in and day out at work. I still work or go to work best I am able.

I'd be a fool to go horseback riding these days as far as the reality of how delicate my back is these days. I did ride horses enough to know they sometimes want to run.

Damn I was a good car driver, and sometimes regret not going into car racing, which can be fatal. Of US Blood sports its up there. Certainly Bullfighting is a blood sport in Spain or Mexico.

I myself remember when sport sex existed briefly due to the pill and penicillin. Herpes and then AIDs inhibited that era.

Living is a thing to do with risks and pain. Some of it makes sense, and some of it doesn't.

Apparently Animal Science ought to make clear how the domestication of horses was used to advance the security and power of humanity.

I am your beast of burden, to paraphrase the Rolling Stones.

What about paraphrase do you not grasp? Reverse, Change, Accept? Should I rewrite the words ironic?

"What about Paraphrase do you not grasp?"

Paraphrase means to rewrite in different words without changing the meaning!

Wiki says: "Paraphrase may attempt to preserve the essential meaning of the material being paraphrased"

I'm just correcting. (for those who care) don't take it personally.

Look, stoppit already ! There might be moderators listening. There's a time and place, you know. Can I have the lavender scented one in mine ? Extra bubbles wouldn't go amiss either. We all know where to go for barking off-topics (not saying nuffink, jess...). If that ain't pimp my thread, I dunno what is. Relax, this'll save a billion in tax dollars for therapy.

That's admisable in evidence

We've scored several newbies in the current year, and also baggged some mods. You seriously don't want to know what's hanging on my wall. Gone a bit Mr and Mrs, but splarfingly funny when you wake up on a grey day.

alllow it - pmsl, that's a rather nice way to respond to a 'guest'. No threats, no reporting, just a straight up bit of humorous response. Kudos. Humour does indeed win the day. The matchsticks under my eyelids just scrunched. A well said riposte, Mr T. Hopefully 'guest' is chuckling as well. A .little explanation goes a long way, and I'm oft guilty of not explaining myself further. If we had a button for 'courteous, yet fun reply', I would assuredly click it. Praise be to the great pumpkin that no such button exists for bad spelling/grammar - I would be so doomed.

Yeah, that's 'cos animals are far less trouble than politicians.
We all love animals (ahhhhh).
Maybe furry politicians is the way forward?
In the UK we have just got ourselves a coalition government..maybe if they coalesced with a few critters?
Cats and squirrels should govern the UK, it's self evident innit?

Just a simple 'thank you', Savvy & Jaxy - the entry is a clear cut endeavour to keep the CR4 feeling of community, which is what sets CR4 above the other tech type websites out there . No, I'm not available for interview unless it's Jay Leno (or at least Kilroy)

Well SavvyExacta,

all this banter is probably not what you expected to be spawned in your intro. However, with your long experience with cr4..perhaps you would.

What is important is that you have become more known, and now members know where to turn for professional advice in your areas.

You are one of the people that has been a constant supporter to CR4 in the past few years, and I'm grateful, as I enjoy and appreciate CR4. I want it to continue and be a legacy for people in the future. Thank you for stepping up to be a moderator, and keep it all going. With you and the other moderators commitment, I think it all might have been at risk.

Best wishes

Chris
