And what happen that poor musician that piggy backed the law abiding citizen that was issues a citation for an unsecured network.

So as long as this law abiding citizen was bent over and having been rammed. Do they expect him to thank them, as ask for another?

This would be like if someone laid down a baggage or piece of personal property for whatever reason, and someone snatched it and ran. If caught, the thief could turn around and sue.

The German court decision seems to impose an undue burden on persons who may have no ill intent. For instance, if you want to put in a wireless router so that you can use your laptop indoors, on the veranda, in the garage, etc., you will not likely know how to spot interlopers and how to secure against them. Fines and other penalties really ought to fall upon those who actively abuse the system, not on mere passive conduits. On the other hand, if you have a "loose" system, it could be your personal information that is being exposed.

I don't think the musician in this story was downloading illegitimately, and then complaining that his source was cut off. Rather, I think other people were downloading his stuff, and he was seeking recourse wherever possible. Both he and the courts should have focused on the real thieves rather than on the poor guy in the middle.

This has been the law in Germany for some years, the law aims to stop illegal downloading of films, music and child pornography....

Though the underworld has so many "Bots" around the world, they probably do not care about WiFi connections so much anymore.....if they ever did....its just the amateurs....

I walked around a town some years ago with my laptop and I found open WiFi connections about one every 100 meters or so.......so it was never a problem to get online and read my mail.....

Is YOUR computer protected against becoming a "Bot"?

I can only assume that the same ruling will apply in all walks of life.

Any speeding motorist will be able to sue the government for providing a road where they are able to speed.

Mobile phone companies will be sued by parents for their kids getting RSI from texting all the time.

Weapon manufacturers being sued because their products have been used to injure somone

How stupid can society get,

Mike

Stupider than we collectively can imagine, I would bet. We've already seen a good start....
