A "Brilliant" Idea: LiteOn's Upcoming Mobile Lamp

Posted June 14, 2010 8:19 AM

From Geeks are Sexy Technology News:

French Canadian journalist Maxime Johnson, who's currently visiting the "Display Taiwan" exhibition in Taipei, brought LiteOn's upcoming LED "mobile lamp" to my attention today. As most LED light bulbs, the "mobile lamp" is compatible with traditional incandescent light bulb sockets, but what sets it apart from similar products is its internal battery, which can keep the light powered for up to two hours in the case of a power failure. The bulb can also be turned on and off when running on battery by gently tapping its base.

This might serve as an alternative for conventional types of emergency lighting. If so, a $50 price might not be bad at all. I would be interested in how well they work in cold temperatures (say -20°F ≈ -29°C).

LED's are generally fairly cold insenitive, but the battery however might be a whole different story.

Indeed. The typical gel-cell battery on an emergency light will give low output, or maybe even freeze, in our environment (a rabbit warren of small sharp-freezer rooms from the 1950s). We may well go with an external automotive battery to power about (40) 12-vdc lights.
